It needs to be said.

Last Thursday, when I read the latest news headline about the attacks on Paris-based satire magazine, Charlie Hebdo, it struck a chord with me. It was not because this was the latest sad event in a sea of heartbreaking news. It struck a chord with me as a person whose life revolves around picking up a pencil and drawing comics. After researching the cartoonists targeted in the attacks, I learned about a group of seasoned individuals with a large body of illustration work who spent their careers making comics.

Like many people on here who draw comics, I was fortunate to be born and grow up in a country where freedom of expression was ingrained in me at a young age. Granted, not every joke is politically correct and there are two sides to every story.

My condolences go out to the friends and family of everyone who lost their lives last week.

Ceci n'est pas une arme. This is not a weapon.

A pen or pencil is not an arm... it can’t kill people, at least: not easily. But it can hurt damn well... so: yes, a pencil is a weapon, and a very powerful one! One that can’t be stopped with guns. And I for one challenge all users of this powerful weapon: USE IT!!! If only to defy the power of a Kalashnikov, just do it.

Well said, kawaii, especially when it's hard to find appropriate words. And congrats to PIT_FACE!

PIT FACE, it's awesome, 200 pages is a magnificent milestone! I must have give the creative adjective usage for the words "glorious trashmonkey" and "GROSS'nGutsy" to the one and only ozoneocean, who also penned the Charby the Vampirate blurb.

Thank you for posting my milestone, Kawaii! Reading what you wrote about what happened in France adds a sobering note to it for me. From one deliciously offensive ink slinger to another (well, others anyways), rest in peace. We'll keep the torches lit over here.

I grew up in Mexico... many times happened that a cartoonist or a journalistwasn targeted by the organized crime or element of the government... some have been killed, but the public has always spoke out and defended freedom of speech... even when our government didn't... when you are offended or disagree you should be able to fight in the market place of ideas... your freedom to offend me should prevail, the same as my freedom to express my disapproval or agreement... "Respect for the rights of others means peace." -Benito Juarez...

I'm not sure if it's appropriate to add a link from another site on here (and if it's not I apologize), but there's an awesome body of works from cartoonists responding to the Charlie Hebdo incident that I thought was pretty amazing.
