This Quackcast expands on my newspost from Friday about forgotten abilities causing plot holes, but now bunny Banes and Lady Tantz wade in to lend their genius to my silly ideas and we chat about what the real issues are: bad writing and laziness!
This is when a character gains the ability to walk through walls or become bullet proof or go back in time and then forgets it for the rest of the story or in the sequel When basically 80% of the problems they encounter could be solved by it… And you're mentally screaming at them “Use your damn power that you got 20 pages ago… Remember that thing that would help you avoid all this trouble!?”
Using easy solutions to get out of problems causes plot-holes! And your audience will hate you for it.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Space Repair Garage The Comic: Groove into this easy-going, saucy space symphony of high tech bleep-blooping cool! You’ll be carried along on a flaming column of power as it slowly ramps up to epic proportions, and then be left alone, coasting in space as it suddenly cuts out.

MacGyver also always said he didn't think whatever it was would work. Surprise. It did.

Ah, the A-Team... I think their stuff was mostly jury-rigged stuff like McGuyver's...? Their rifles never worked once though!

Of course ST:the original series was notorious for the one time improvisation that would have made things so much easier next time out but were not mentioned.

All the US "gadget" adventure shows from Six Million Dollar man to Knight Rider to Airwolf used that same one-time trick of the week -- that invariably was never used again. One reason I couldn't stand to watch them. At least ST:tng would often acknowledge the trick from last time and reject it as an alternative. Continuity editing and a series "bible " And often on McGuyver it was said itd only work once or he'd only have the parts once .

True. Very, very true. I think sometimes they'd be testing it for the military or something... probably from the influence of the James Bond films that were still big at the time and always had special devices?

Gunwallace at 12:13AM, Feb. 26, 2019

I can remember Knight Rider and similar TV shows would also reveal a new device or power at the start of the episode which was then used at the end of the episode to resolve the plot, but would never be mentioned again, ever. Now that was some lazy writing.
