The steady march of progress

It goes without saying that this past year has been a clusterfunk and a half. However despite all the upheaval, societal change, devastation and the final encroachment of light at the end of this exhaustingly long tunnel there has been much time to do the art things. As the months have crawled/raced by, the speed at which I can draw vs it’s consistency of look and quality has drastically improved.

I can now recognise a style when my work is stacked alongside each other. The linework is consistent and the faces have a certain look about them that says, “Yeah this was drawn by me,”. It’s nice to see honestly. The eyes are more often than not in the right place, the characters no longer look the same when they stand next to each other and the angles at which they are drawn are more dynamic.

Although I still have a long way to go in terms of improvement, it’s good to look back at my work and know there was progress. It’s easy to fall into the trap of not recognising positive changes, particularly, if you’re like me, you find yourself comparing your art to others. However, that’s not to say I don’t then take a moment to identify what is that I am comparing and then turning it around. If I like something, or find myself slightly on the envious side, I try and learn how the artist might have accomplished that look. How did they use the shading/highlighting? What fonts do they use? What is it about the layout that makes this page look engaging.

Self reflection and a little bit of ego stroking goes a long way towards you feeling like you can stay in the game. How has your comic improved over the past year? What are you focusing on improving right now? Let us know in the comment section below! And join us on Sunday evening for our Quackchat at 5:30PM(EST)!

Don’t forget you can now advertise on DrunkDuck for just $2 in whichever ad spot you like! The money goes straight into running the site. Want to know more? Click this link here! Or, if you want to help us keep the lights on you can sponsor us on Patreon. Every bit helps us!

Excellent! Congrats on your hard work and progress! I had a surge of productivity last year - slowed down after that.
