The DD Fashion Spotlight!
Number 21.



Alicka and Winston are two characters created by Ukrainian DD comic artist MadMindInk. We should be supporting Ukrainian people at this time, but that's not the only reason Alicka and Winston are featured today! This is a bit of a different spotlight; instead of the unique and interesting fashions of characters we're going to see the progression of these characters as it's shown by their changing fashion choices. Alicka and Winston are bother and sister, Alicka is older and very protective of Winston. In the start of the comic they're both quite conservative, but then Alicka decides to leave home with Winston to protect him from abuse….



Early on




For a start I'll just say that all people in this world have cheek spirals, so those things aren't limited to these two.
Here they're both in white, summery clothing. They both have a childish, naive look about them. Alicka wears a bow and Winston has a bunny hat.

Midway



This is where things change. Alicka cuts and styles her hair, using it to assert her independence and agency. Her clothing becomes more individual and interesting. Her and Winston are in black and grey, their golden hair is a striking contrast to their dark outfits. Dressed for winter, their style could be described as Gothic, industrial, punk, whimsy, fairy…
The bunny hat has a sentimental attachment for Winston, shorts feature prominently indicating his young age and low status. Alicka is in tighter, tailored clothes, indicating her transition to young womanhood.

Later



Winston has given up his bunny hat and shorts. He looks more confident and mature. Alicka's hair and clothes have become more varied while less precious and careful. She looks more adult and determined.
I really like the way Alicka's changing fashions and hair show her blossoming independence and growing sense of self direction over the course of the comic, as it does for Winston, but to a lessor extent.
