Pit and Tantz join me to talk about about fairies, fae, Faery, Fair folk, Yokai, and all that good stuff. They're like the dark-matter of the supernatural world: they're not really gods, demons, monsters, or ghosts (though sometimes they are al of those sort off…), they generally fill the spaces between. They exist in a lot of cultures all over the place. They can be naughty spirits, elemental creatures, or animalistic, but generally they're quite alien and unknowable. This discussion comes from Tantz's newspost on Saturday.

We talk about the pretty fairies from popculture and how those were quite popular in the latter half of the 19th century among the spiritualists and romantic naturalists. We talk about the “royal fae”, the sexy humanoid Fae like Titania, Puck and Oberon (mentioned in Shakespeare), and Herne the hunter. Fairy myth like changelings and kelpies and how they may have arisen as cautionary tales. We chat about how alien mythology simply directly replaces fairy myth in the modern world with things like abduction, mutilation of farm animals, lost time and other fantastical ideas. We also talk about the modern KING of the fairy image and myth: Brian Froud, who not only created a brilliant book with gathered myths and explanations about the seelie and unseelie court, but also single handedly created and influenced the very look of all modern illustrations of fae-folk with his particular stylings and his work on things like The Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal, the Story Teller and other things.
What are your fave fairies and fairy stories? What do you hate in fairy myth?

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Ark Hunters - Notes cascading and calibrating, before committing and tumbling down and along in a continuous torrent, a cataract of notes, flowing and bursting outward. Acoustic and electronic, guitar, violin, piano and percussion vying continuously.

Hi, Tombag here, the author of Ark Hunters. Sorry for not commenting sooner, as I've had my mind on things lately and didn't know about this until just recently. Just wanted to give a huge thank you to Gunwallace for the theme to my comic. I honestly never expected someone to do such a thing for my comic and I am eternally thankful for it. I can picture the theme playing in the background as Sammy and Vincent are going to their next destination with all of their usual trouble and goofiness happening during their trip. I hope more people give my stories a chance, as now you also have an awesome theme to go with it as well! Please don't hesitate to comment, no matter what you have on your mind, whether it's my comics on this site or my written stories on RoyalRoad.com. Links can be found on my profile. Again, a huge thank you to Gunwallace for the theme and I hope to see more of you checking out my stuff! -Tombag

Alps are my favorite fae-creature, hands down. To your point Oz, I agree the sort of "demon" designation is post-Christian propagandizing against the "fair folk", but there's definitely some fairies that harm humans in a deliberate way. 'tis true, most human death results from fairy territoriality and major faux pas, but there's quite a few that will kill a man just for a laugh. For the most part fae are viewed as having a "childish" cruelty, as a toddler pulling wings and legs off a fly has no concept of the suffering they're inflicting on a helpless creature.

@ Hushicho there's soetvif crossover in some ways but it's hard to show a direct relationship... Demons tend to want direct harm on humans while Fae only want that tangentially usually, because humans get in there way or it would be momentarily diverting... There's no real hatred. The ones that are constantly dangerous are more like wild animals.

Don't forget Shakespeare's fairies also featured heavily in Christopher Moore's "Shakespeare for Squirrels."

Fairies, demons, youkai...all related at least a little, which makes it even more rich, varied, and complex a population! They share a special neighbourhood in the setting of my series Demoniac Verse, which will be popping back up soon. Always interesting to hear people talk about myth, folklore, and legend -- it's such a broad and deep topic! One could talk about them endlessly.
