In another round of shocking events, the comedy world lost another great last Friday, with comic Louie Anderson.

As part of the target demographic for Saturday morning cartoons in the mid-nineties, my introduction to Louie’s humor was through “Life with Louie”. Throughout the duration of its five season run, the cartoon series focused on a grade school aged Louie Anderson as he dealt with schoolyard bullies, preoccupied parents, and random observations in a suburban neighborhood.

The most relatable part of “Life with Louie” was that the Louie character had realistic flaws such as procrastinating on a science project topic, feigning illness to get out of class, or trying to have an uninterrupted conversation with his dad. Each episode was loosely based around Louie’s childhood experiences from his vantage point. Louie’s character was prepared with quick quips and observations that were years more mature than other lead protagonists from similar shows of the time.

It was important to see a character like Louie, whose imperfections were singled-out in class by teachers or targeted on the playground by bullies, in case life ever imitated art.

Humor and a lighthearted attitude win in the end.

"Louie’s character was prepared with quick quips and observations that were years more mature than other lead protagonists from similar shows of the time." That's one of the main reasons that Peanuts became such an iconic strip during it's introduction. You didn't often see kids talking in such grown up ways.

We've lost so many recently who were icons, or large parts of our lives before now. I can't say I was the most familiar with Louie Anderson's work, but I do remember him popping up in a few things in funny ways, and I do remember Life with Louie! I had no idea it ran that long, since that was about when I went through a time where I didn't get to enjoy Saturday morning as much. That is a really respectable run, especially for the time and the medium.
