The end of the year is fast approaching. Per tradition these past few years, I have done an article focusing on setting comic goals or habits for the upcoming year. Last year, for instance, I had a whole bunch of goals to achieve, habits to establish and projects I wanted to complete. However, life, as it does, had other plans. Weddings, illness, family and friends meant that these lofty dreams remained in the clouds. That’s not to say nothing got done. I did manage to establish the “putting the dishwasher on at night” habit.
As I was pondering my new goals for 2025 I was reminded of an upcoming video game, called “Baby Steps” due to be released next year. It is focused on a man unwittingly and unwillingly going on an adventure. As the player, it is your job to ensure he keeps moving forward one step at a time. Given that one of the creators of this game is of “Getting Over It” and QWOP fame, rest assured that this new game’s jank will be a feature rather than a bug.
The things we could learn from a man in a cauldron, holding a hammer.
The main character falls over, onto, off and down many a perilous surface. The aim is to pick him back up and move onwards. The metaphor is not a subtle one of course. But it is one I am keeping in the forefront of my mind as the new year looms.
Fostering this sense of forward momentum can help give you the motivation you need to get the bigger things done. Even if the goals seem lofty, I still think it’s worth writing it down. Seeing them there on paper clears the mind. It also helps make it seem that little bit real. It is out of my head. Now I can see it. From there, breaking things down into smaller chunks helps ensure you know where to put one foot in front of the other.
As for me, I have my big comic goals. We are relaunching an old series of ours and reworking another. I am not where I would like to be with them, but then again, we are much further ahead than when we started.
And if I fall down, I’m going to remember that awkward man, picking himself up and continuing to make his way across an open field, one step at time.

My goals for 2025? Finnishing writing the scripts of two comic series, Molly Lusc and Idfestation, and see if I manage to work in the storylines and characters of the other comics I got posted so that I can just focus on one mayor comic (Molly Lusc) and one side project comic (Idfestation) only and forget all the rest. I've finally accepted that I have to stop spreading myself thin, or I'm never gonna get things properly done:P
