Greetings! I hope you've all had an enjoyable holiday season so far, no matter what you're celebrating and regardless of actual ‘holidays’ are part of it for you.
The end of the year is still about a week away, but this will be my last regular Newspost of 2024.
I'm now thinking of some of the Newsposts I liked, or didn't like, or articles I meant to do during the year that didn't get done…
Since I've been a movie nut for a long time, I meant to pepper in some thoughts about some of the classics that had an anniversary this year.
I was thinking of the year 1994 in particular, 30 years ago, which was a pretty stellar year for great movies.
I feel lucky that I was able to go to the theater and see these movies fresh, with no idea what they
were about - Forrest Gump! Pulp Fiction! The Shawshank Redemption, for cryin' out loud! Even just those three, when I think about the fact that they all came out in the same year, and are still three of my favorite go-to movies is kind of amazing. Also, I'm getting old!
yeah…
But 1994 offered Clear and Present Danger! And Ed Wood! Ed Wood, for me, is probably Tim Burton's best movie. It might be Johnny Depp's best performance too. It's a little under the radar, but fantastic. Creative and hilarious.
Movies I didn't see at the time, but were cultural touchstones were there too - The Crow (comic book adaptation that really struck a nerve for people, and lightning in a bottle that they should NOT be remaking! Let it go, people!)
There was Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and the Coen Brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy! And The Last Seduction, a classic film noir.
One of my favorites (and it holds up, I just rewatched it) was The River Wild! Love that one.
Holy smokes - it was also the release of the animated Disney film The Lion King. Seeing that in the theater was frikkin epic.
And CLERKS came out that year. I don't think I saw it until a year or two later, but that one made a lasting impact on us 90's kids!
Satire like Serial Mom and Natural Born Killers, blockbusters like True Lies, cynical romance with Four Weddings and a Funeral, plus Bullets over Broadway - and one that I only saw years later, Nobody's Fool with Paul Newman. Love that one. I could just keep listing movies now that I looked them up. Wow, there are some off-the-beaten-track favorites from that year that I used to love.
Plus it looks like ‘94 was the end of the Police Academy franchise with their last movie! Somebody put that thing out of its misery, so that’s good! xD
It was also the end of the Star Trek TNG TV show, and the release of Star Trek Generations.
No wonder I didn't accomplish anything that year! There were way too many things to watch!
And I still haven't seen Tammy and the T Rex, for heaven's sake!
Now THIS year's schedule is starting to fill up!
In any case, best of the season to ya,
and I'll see you again in …. 1995?
Bye for now!

Certainly a rollercoaster year with ups and downs.

1994 there was big blizzard in the US northeast. Was living in the New London area and it was horrible. My boss sent me to work in Hawaii for a couple of months during this time. Pretty sure my sunbathing on tropical isles while my wife shoveled snow is one of the many contributing factors leading to our divorce.

@Tantz - It was a fantastic experience. Disney's second golden age of animation was in full swing!

I remember watching the Lion King in the theater that year and being absolutely floored that Disney had the b- the guts to kill Mufasa for good. Also it was so good I couldn't believe it. Last time I experienced that was with Mulan.
