We're talking about tropes that we like hate. Some we brought up were conspiracy theories, especially the ones that involve a whiteboard where all the info and photos stuck on there are connected by red string and the ones in anime where at the end of the episode a mysterious character looks at the action from a distance and says cryptically “ah, this is all going exactly to plan…”

Others included Isekai, Life re-dos, power couples, Time loops, and 1930s style adventure. Oh, and one I hate is the courtroom episode trope. What are your fave story tropes and which ones you do dislike with a passion?

This week Gunwallace has given us a theme inspired by 696 - Faeward - A very happy, joyful and jaunty tune with an almost nautical air about it with a variety of instruments, mainly synth, with a special appearance by bagpipes.

Tropes are fun in how meaningless they are. They're basically just common writing conventions, but what's funny is that if you try to avoid them, you either wind up falling into different tropes you weren't aware of or you wind up creating new tropes. There are even tropes for avoiding tropes. I have my on TV Tropes page, and I think it's the most flattering thing in the world.

@JohnCelestri - "I learned that audiences mostly want familiarity presented to them in different way." -That is completely true!

@Ozoneocean and @PaulEberhardt, Sometimes (at a starting point) I take tropes and try to weave them together in order to create something different. I learned that audiences mostly want familiarity presented to them in different way.

@dragonsong12 - We're the same, you and I.

@PaulEberhardt - that's a classic trop: the dumb guy that accidentally succeeds. I love that one ^_^

PaulEberhardt at 7:23AM, July 16, 2024

No, wait, I do have a favourite trope, even if I hardly ever get around to using it myself: the incompetent achiever - characters who can do anything because they're too dumb to realise how impossible or dangerous it is. It's cringe, on the face of it, but somehow always fun too. I guess it's because everyone who has ever worked hard on anything and then been made to feel that 80% of your efforts are always wasted, no matter what you do, can 100% relate to the way this dumb person exasperates all the other, more intelligent characters. I think there's a Simpsons episode or two that carry this trope to extremes, and every time they do it is a blast.

Bad guy turning good and getting killed for his troubles. It has become such a predictable move, I'm fed up and bored out of my skull with it. However, dragonsong12 is right: I'd be cool even with that one if I saw it used in an interesting, purposeful way for a change. I don't really have any favourite tropes for that reason, as it's really all about what authors do with them.

I don't actually mind any of the tropes you mentioned, but that doesn't really mean anything. It can also be a very personal thing based on life experience or types of media encountered and I definitely have tropes I can't stand also. Still, I'm very much of the mindset that anything can work if used properly - For example, something that really annoys me is the villain saying "we're not so different, you and I" but the reason it annoys me isn't because it has no purpose in a story - quite the contrary, it can be a VERY powerful moment if used right, causing the hero to stop and reevaluate his actions and beliefs. No, it bothers me because it's overused and usually used improperly, instances where the obvious reply from the hero SHOULD just be "uh...yes we are..." It's less a problem of the tools and more an issue of how they are used.
