Freddy Krueger's special day and the Anthology of Dreams

We're jumping ahead a bit, here: I meant to do horror/halloween related articles throughout October, starting next week - but I caught a little video that reminded me of a special anniversary happening this year!

Freddy Krueger and his first final girl Nancy down for a 40th Anniversary reunion, talking about the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

I was a big fan of slasher movies, and Friday the 13th is the gold standard for me (ridiculous as that seems, in a way - but I know there are a LOT of people who agree on that franchise's status).

And actually, I don't have a lot of knowledge about the “Nightmare” franchise. I'm sure I've seen at least half of them, but it's only the first film, the third one (the Dream Warriors), and Freddy vs. Jason that I remember much about. I have the full DVD set and haven't watched them for some reason - maybe this October is the time to do it!

But the Freddy character, and his actor, Robert Englund - I LOVE them! Englund is brilliant…and I was around to read the old issues of Fangoria/Famous Monsters magazines, where there was an article questioning whether Robert Englund, who played the sweet natured alien Willie in the “V” tv series, could play a scary monster in a horror movie (the first Nightmare on Elm St).

I'd say he pulled it off…

And the character has got to be one of the most brilliant and terrifying character concepts ever - the murdered killer of children, who came back from the dead to kill people in their dreams. I mean, come ON - that is terrifying!

Like I said, Dream Warriors is one I have fond memories of. Late night sleepovers at friends' houses, with a Nightmare on Elm Street sequel in the VCR…great times! And Freddy Vs Jason is a regular favorite to rewatch. Way too often, probably…

The franchise has its highs and lows - “New Nightmare”, where original director Wes Craven returned to try a meta-horror version of Freddy was ahead of its time (a couple years later Craven would dominate the late 90's horror scene with SCREAM). My vague knowledge of the series allows me to know it had its bad episodes too. But the concept and the character were really the next level for slasher movies, and as we head into October, i have to give the dark lord of bad dreams his propers!

Happy Anniversary, Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and Freddy and 'Nightmare fans everywhere.

The Drunk Duck Anthology: Flock of Dreams is fantastic. You really can not afford not to get a copy. I created a topic in the forums to talk about it. No spoilers though... ( https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/forum/topic/179735/?page=1#latest )

Nightmare on Elm Street? Loved those movies. 40 years on? Wow. Can not believe how old my hands are starting to look.

Halloween? Bring it on!

Ah yes, the original Nightmare Freddy. I'm with you on preferring Jason but still liking Freddy as his own character, and I might be one of the few people in the world who even enjoyed Jason X XD
