If there is one thing my comic partner and I have realised these past few years is this. The first half of the year is manic for us. Every year we get together to inscribe our goals into stone and within two months life has bulldozed its way through them. This year promises to be no different.
To help us manage this trend, which, let’s face it, is not something we can change for the moment, is to work with the limited time we have. We rebooted a series of ours back in January. In the lead up to it we began to make episodes in advance. Although we didn’t get the volume of episodes we wanted, we do have a buffer of a few weeks.
Maintaining a buffer is the next thing we have to consider. One way we do this is by shortening the length of our episodes so we can get them done quicker. We also had to find a balance when it came to posting them. As much as we would love to, we can’t post every week. But we can manage every two weeks. This gives us more time to keep working on episodes and ensuring we keep that buffer nice and healthy looking.
We like to divide our story into chapters or arcs depending on the series. This helps us pace out the story but also where we can take our breaks. We try to plan around the certain times of the year where we know holidays are coming up or when we have time off so we can spend a little bit of time getting episodes or writing done. Of course, we make sure to actually sleep too.
Of course, there are just times where we run out of our buffer. Life is just like that. At that point we just try our best to maintain the upload schedule. Thankfully shorter arcs allow us to take time off at more regular intervals, so with any luck we can build that library up again.
At the end of the day, it’s about what works for you. With time, we hope we can get more practiced at this. What about you? Do you prefer having a buffer or do you like doing episodes/pages week to week?

Indeed. That gif made me foam at the mouth instantly until my brain caught up with the situation. 😆 Time and again I told myself to make a buffer but for some reason got even slower. It's part of why I eventually dropped the concept of schedules altogether, although I did realise even at the time that on that way madness lies.

I knew when I started working on VAMPIRE GIRL Season 2, it was going to take a much longer time than the first season took me; the first season was a rush job, and it unfortunately shows, but I wanted to make sure the second season was a vast improvement in terms of art and storytelling. It took me two and a half years to complete altogether, but I gave myself about less than a year for a buffer period. Too often I try and fail to meet deadlines, which is why I try (and sometimes fail) to get things completely well in advance.

You're evil for that GIF. XD (Not a criticism to be clear. Evil GENIUS! haha!) But on topic, yeah. I kind of obsess over my buffers. I try to keep at least two months in advance and if I can get more, I absolutely take it. If it falls under two months I start to stress. It usually does take the full week to get my pages done, so without a buffer it'd be cutting it close every week. Haven't missed any updates, after all! :D
