Episode 466 - And then What?

What happens to characters after the big action scene or climactic moment? This could be anywhere in the story but it's usually close to the end. Do they process any of the things that have happened to them to lead them up to that point or do they just forget about everything and simply act as if nothing except the last 4 seconds matter? The later seems to be the trend in a lot of badly written fiction, and it's a notable trope in 80s style action films. Death of family members or lovers are irrelevant when you have a hot action star standing next to you!

“So, what are you going to do now?” Someone always asks…
“Well I thought I'd settle down somewhere and open a bar.” replies the characterless hero, displaying complete disregard for the entire list of things that happened to them throughout the course of the story and instead recites a meaningless and tired line that was written before their writer was even born.
And THAT my friends is what we call bad writing ;)
Unless you're deliberately writing something spoofy, it's usually worthwhile to reward the audience: They've just sat through your story, hopefully they'll be invested in your characters. The audience really, really appreciates when those character acknowledge the effects and existence of events that you saw happen to them earlier on in the story. It makes the characters more believable and rounded, and it really helps with the suspension of disbelief.
Like anything though you can overdo it. You don't want the characters traumatised over every on-screen death (unless specifically called for), and you don't want them going on and on about something that happened to them in the story, just acknowledging it and showing some effect on the character is enough usually.
It's a good idea to remember what it was too! Don't forget about it and mix things up like in The Witcher wherethe writers forget Yennifer gave up her uterus for magical plastic surgery to look beautiful so she could grab the prized easy posting of court magician in her home country and lord it over the people there, and instead the story centers around how they “forced” her to give up her baby-making parts in order to be allowed to practice magic… Your job as a writer is to keep your story straight or your character growth will be a nonsense and you will look like a fool.

Episode 456 - Smackdown on Quackjeeves

Smack Jeeves has been sold out from under its community to a Korean mobile content provider company NHN. The same company approached us last year but the deal didn't go through because we were too strict on retaining control of the site and protecting our community, SJ apparently didn't have those same concerns for the people that made the site so special and that is a huge shame. What's happened now is that NHN is streamlining the site, minimising the creative members who host their comics there and turning it into a content delivery site for its hand-picked pro work, turning it into another souless clone corporate of Webtoons or Tapas.
Episode 426 - Sidekicking

Inspired by Emma Clare's Friday newspost about supporting characters, today we're discussing sidekicks! Sidekicks are a useful character type that are used in so many different ways. They can be a specialised type of supporting character that are also a main character or they can be the main protagonist in some cases. In comics sidekicks came in during the early days as a way of giving juvenile readers their own insert character who they could identify with… Bucky Barnes, Jimmy Olsen, Robin etc. They had other functions like giving the hero someone to save, providing commentary, reaction and exposition. Later when that kind of sidekick fell out of favour they became superheroes in their own right.

In this Quackcast we discuss a couple of things. First we chat about the prototype comment reply notification system that Alexey our programmer has just now come up with and people like Albino Ginger helped to pay for! And we talk about ways to make it more user-friendly, like having the first line of a comment show up on the comment notification pages… We'd LOVE more feedback on that! So please consider testing out the system and giving us your take on it. Then we chatted about the art of the TITLE! Why do things have the titles they do? What are some good or bad titles? Why did you choose YOUR title? Star Wars is an example of a good title for a movie: it told people exactly what to expect in a time when there weren't many other films like it, this is why it was never called “A New Hope” or “Episode 4” the way we mistakenly call it today, because no one in 1977 would have gone to see it ;) Happy birthday!!!!!!! In this Quackcast we tackle the topic of fandom. Fandoms can be interesting, fun, helpful, fascinating, inspiring, or even bizarre and disturbing. Fandoms are frequently great resources for information about their subject and can really enrich your experience of whatever you're into. Fandoms are also a hotbed of creative energy- some of our most iconic literature was written by people who started out as ardent fans- even the great H.P. Lovecraft was part of a fandom of Gothic horror fiction along with fellow writers Robert Bloch, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These highly influential writers were influenced by such greats as Arthur Machen, Robert W. Chambers, Edgar Allen Poe, and Lord Dunsany to name a few. And of course Lovecraft and his group went to to influence legions of fans who changed the face of 20th century pop culture. Looking at fandoms gives a cultural roadmap so we can follow influences, where ideas originated, how they changed, how pop-culture was created, and more importantly: they give us great clues about what other stuff we might like to read! No music this week I'm afraid. Mr Gunwallace is dealing with the fallout from a huge earthquake in his native New Zealand.
