Episode 275 - Layouts, what to do and what not

Jun 13, 2016

The topic this week was ALL Banes' idea! We talk about page layout: techniques to make a good, readable layout, and stuff to avoid. We have Tantz Aerine (greetings), Banes, and myself, Ozoneocean, chatting about how best to do page layouts, at least from our own limited perspectives. None of us are pros in this regard, but we've been doing comics for many years now and we've all developed some pretty decent ideas about how best to do it, in our own ways. Banes is mostly influenced by American style comics, which have more interesting layouts. Tantz and I were manly influenced by European comics, which tend to have a more conservative by very constantly readable style of “box” layout. On Pinky TA and Bottomless Waitress the majority of my pages are in a fairly standard box format, but every now and again I experiment with crazy shapes, overlapping panels, no panels at all, and even “infinite canvas” pages that work with the scroll function. Speaking of which we briefly mention Scott McCloud and the comic Heart of Keol, which uses vertically scrolling large pages. The music this week by Gunwallace was Wastelanders Anonymous, an epic classic rock tune with a lovely repeating upward base rhythm, soaring guitars and authoritative keyboard.

Hello from Belgrade in Serbia! This Quackcast was recorded 3 weeks ago and I am currently in Europe, though I'm still writing this from Perth Western Australia 3 weeks in the past… So in this particular Quackcast you get to hear ME Ozoneocean, Banes, Bravo1102 and Tantz Aerine (who I visited in Athens last week), chat about the process of creation! Creation is a topic very close to the heart of all webcomic creators and the four of us try and explore all aspects of it with the help of some very wise people on DD. The music for this week is Gunwallace's them fro The Temple at 50 Fathoms, a comic by Skreem, SO if you like a hyper dance club sound, you better strap on your dancin' pants when you listen to this one!

This week, we pose the question "How can webcomics translate itself into real life work for you? What sorts of skills and things that you do in webcomics lead to real life jobs? (and viceversa)" Hear ozoneocean and Banes ramble about snow and motivation, make half-hearted attempts at funny voices (until ozone's triumphant Southern character wins our hearts), and shake your head (in wonderment) as they rally back for an inspirational finale! And check out our wonderful features this week, with Mer-Men and Bat-Girls!

Dressed in a long, tight fitting sparkly black evening gown and elbow length opera gloves, the lovely Skoolmunkee dashes from the scene of the murder of poor Banes to arrive breathless on the Quackcast set and establish her alibi! This week we talk about what us amateur webcomic artists do to support ourselves, or just in those few brief moments when we're not actually making webcomics, and how that affects, influences and changes our webcomic work. We have many interesting contributions from interesting people! I must once again apologise for the sound quality though, major computer trouble I'm afraid. Episode 63 re-issued! How working life affects webcomicing.

It's the horror time of year, and for once we get a Quackcast out in time for the holiday! PIT_FACE is our guest this week, and as DD's queen of horror she has plenty of expertise and opinions on the subject.

With the real, actual site changeover this week, oz and skool decide it's a good time to talk about the long and occasionally sordid history of their favorite inebriated waterfowl. The Duck may be sober now but it will always be hammered in our hearts.
