There was ALL sorts of kerfuffle on the internet centred around the phrase “Heroes don't do that”. It began with an interview of two people involved in the production of the Harley Quinn TV animated series. According to them there was a sex scene between Batman and Cat Woman, including a scene of cunnalingus. They claim that a representative from DC told them to cut that scene, saying “Heroes don't do that”... But what is the REAL story?

The nerd-net exploded over that! It's super important to realise that it is NOT a direct quite from DC comics though, it's a 3rd hand paraphrased remark: originally second hand and paraphrased by the two interviewees, then delivered 3rd hand to us by the news blog that published it. Hence it CAN NOT be said to represent the editorial policy and exact words of DC.
Further, we don't know if the intent was “Heroes don't perform cunnalingus” or “We don't want to show our heroes performing oral sex on screen”. Most of the nerd-net automatically assumed the former, perhaps because people tend to think overly literally, or they like to go for the funnier, stupider, more bombastic interpretations. The latter seems the far more logical and obvious version to me though. It's silly to think there would be certain super common sex acts that DC would forbid their heroes participating in off screen.
With that in mind we're thinking about the idea of the “image” of characters, including our own: What WOULD they do onscreen and what would they NOT be shown doing?
This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to SweetGum - Hot summers day in the shade, looking out over the wide expanse of a fresh green sunlit valley where you can see to the limit of your dreams. Far mountains dissolve into the sky and the world goes on forever.

Sexual tension between characters is a great way to augment the conflict that drives a story. The audience really wants that to resolve into a relationship or at least an assignation of some sort… The longer it goes on though, the bigger they want the coming together to be, which can be dangerous for the creator because it's so easy to disappoint. it's usually better to resolve the tension earlier than later, OR keep it going forever but keep it interesting and don't ever sour it or make it turn stale.

In the year 2020, the world had been devastated by a global pandemic, life had changed forever… It's 2021 and our 4 unlikely heroes have banded together, a topic borrowed from the wise and gracious Emma Clare… My fave “infodump” in fiction is the narration by Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona. My least fave is the massive long description of fish and how submarine equipment works in 10,000 leagues under the sea by Jules Verne (the novel). What are you most fave and least fave infodumps?

Tantz's newspost on Saturday about the problems of second guessing yourself and the issues that can arise from that was the inspiration for this week's newspost. Second guessing yourself can have GOOD possibilities and negative ones. The good: it forces you to hone your creative work and improve it, you don't just put things out there, you evaluate them and improve them! The bad: you can get stuck in a loop where you keep on thinking your stuff is not good enough, you might get hung up on one little thing and never move past it.

Today we compare and contrast two ways of making characters: starting with a pure archetype and building it with tropes, or creating a character organically through circumstance and interaction with other characters.

You may have read about how a conspiracy theorist dug up some 10 year old tweeted jokes by director James Gunn and got him fired from Disney… Well that incident inspired this Quackcast, which is a re-take on the whole personal brand idea that we discussed in Quackcast 289.

Here we go again, back to formulas! This time we got some external input. Fellow DDers had a say about their idea about the utility of formulas and how they use them in their writing and comics. It's important to understand formulas in writing so you know what works and why it works, it can help you in your own work. And when you need to and you've got the ability you can create your OWN writing formula. But remember: the formula is just the bare skeleton, you have to add all the meat and flesh to it with the rest of your writing, don't let the bones show through! Listen to Gunwallace's beautiful theme for Brave New World! Oh, and one last thing… HAPPY BIRTHDAY TANTZ AERINE!!!!
