Professor Placement: It was originally made from the root of the sassafras plant, and the way it formed a foamy head like beer caused it to be called such. Having tried several varieties of the stuff, I like IBC the best, but dang is it expensive! IBC also makes some awesome cream soda, which does look a lot like most of the beers sold in the US. I can't really say how close root beer and beer are in taste. Smelling copious amounts of stale beer pretty much made me decide that I will never try it.
