@Darius, artistically speaking, some characters are meant to be "stairs" for the others. They take time to develop, because it's real hard to round many characters at the same time. Specially if we are talking about strips, that are very short scenes. Eventually, Ellen, Artie, Maarten and many others will be expanded, but my focus at the moment is the four main characters.

I like their father. Actually, now that I think about it, we haven't seen any "good" things about their mother. I don't mean that to be offensive, though, but she's almost as bland/blank slate as Artie is, while in this page ALONE their father shows himself to not give a crap about "normal" social conventions.
