And as he is being pulled up, he presses one of the buttons out of curiosity, or perhaps the button bumped against something on the way up. Either way, something bad is activated at where he was previously. Like some creature got released to right where he was standing momentarily before, or a big explosion.

No time for buttons, Neddie needs to get up the chute to find out what was going on with that grate on the wall. Punch with your slinky arm up the chute. One end of the slinky will extend up the cute and catch onto the screw driver while the other end remains attached to our heroes arm. The Slinky will then retract, pulling Neddie up the chute and back into the room with the screw driver in it (he can then hang from the screw driver with his graceful cat skills while he thinks of something else to do.) Yes, I have been thinking about this today.
