I remember him mentioning the seismic activity, but I was thinking that was referring more to the use of the Mammon Machine.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, it has been a while since I've played the game, but I think Robo explains that he detected seismic activity from the other end of the Gate and the resolution is that there may have been a cave in due to the Gate's energy output or some such. Regardless, it's implied that the only decision is to take the teleporter.
