Well, it is Friday, and I hope it is a happy one for you. It has been a sad day around here. We had to have one of our cats put to sleep today. Dexter was nearly 17 years old, and was suffering from cancer. We tried to make his last days as comfortable as we could, but his condition worsened this week.

I have had to put down several pets in my life, but I will never be able to do so without feeling sadness and guilt. I know it was the humane thing to do, and I hated the idea of Dexter suffering in the pain he exhibited today. Still, I feel like I betrayed his trust.

I recently read something about the death of a pet cat. It went something like this: “Cats - they steal our food, and they steal our hearts.”

So very true.

Owning a pet always involves those tough decisions at times. Else we wouldn't be trying to take good care of them.

I counseled a friend of mine last night about the same thing, Jay. Her cat was 19, she spent $1000 trying to save her kitty from kidney failure, holistic healing, prayer and more. But she lost her pet anyway, and she was still carrying the guilt that she let her cat down. You don't have any reason to carry any guilt. 17 years is a long life for a cat, I wish we could have them longer. But when the cycle of life comes to a close, you know so very well that they loved you as much as you loved them.

I'm really about your loss. I know this situation all too well. It's a bit like losing a family member, in a way, and this feeling of guilt is the worst part of it. But how guilty would you have had to feel if you didn't make that decision?

no, you didn't betray his trust, He trusted you to make hard chooses, trusted you to be strong enough to let him go hunt among the stars, he knew you were no longer a kitten, and he could safely leave you to hunt on your own and carry on,
