Happy Friday, everybody. I don’t have a new page to upload this week. I have purchased a Cintiq 13HD tablet and I’m trying to get the hang of it. I really like being able to draw directly on the screen, but it is showing me just how out of practice I am with pen and ink. For years, I have been drawing with a mouse using Adobe Illustrator and that has gotten me used to a disconnected sense of eye-hand coordination. Despite what Wacom says about how their non-glare glass being very close to the feel of drawing on paper, I am, after more than a week, just now getting used to the experience.

I don’t think I will abandon Illustrator for Photoshop, but I will be using both applications together much more than I have in the past. With that in mind, Danielle Dark will be getting a slightly different look in the coming months. It may take me a while to settle on a technique.

I’ve done quite a few experiments, but this image is my favorite, so far. I hope you like it.

Drawing with a mouse! Insanity! I just could not do it. I remember my first tablet. 1bit pressure sensitive. Super low res. Ah those were the days. I've been tempted to go video tablet, but I'm afraid the latency and/or distance between the pen and image would bother me. But like anything practice makes perfect. You'll have to report on your progress as you go. Interesting you mention tablet size. I'm thinking of upgrading from the medium size Intous to Large so I can get a bit more workable space. I get jaggies unless I zoom really close.

What can I say? One of my motivations for drawing comics is that I have an excuse for not having to stare at a screen for a while, which basically rules out tablets for me. Plus I kind of love drawing on paper, and computers and I tend to be constantly add odds with one another. But it's still fascinating, and I love the great artwork you can coax out of these things. It's probably a matter of practice and habit, but then your pen-and-paper work as seen here is stunning, as well. Kudos!

There is definitely a learning curve. My main problem is making nice smooth curing strokes. It's a lot different than on paper. The size of the tablet may also be an issue, but I can't afford the larger Cintiq models. It will take a while to be completely comfortable with it, but I'm having fun.
