MAAAGGIIIC. The ultimate deus ex machina and explanation of plot holes and bad story telling.
The number one thing that always bugged me about Tokyo Mew Mew was that they got their powers through science. Sooo… are the two adult guys that gave them their powers and outfits super creepy for putting a bunch of teens and preteens in skimpy outfits or am I missing something?
The logic behind their transformations never made any sense to me. My number one question: Who originally designed the frlly outfits, anyway?

@Kou: TMM was an early 2000s series, the genre was still geared almost entirely for kids at the time. Ever since Madoka Magica came out in 2011, the entire genre's been swamped with deconstructions. Almost all the new series have geared towards an older audience because the kids that grew up on Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew etc. are the still the main audience but most want the more serious take on it.

And not all editorial interference is necessarily bad. On some TV Tropes page they have a link to the original intended Sailor Moon costumes that the editors rejected and I think they made a good choice in that instance. (Your mileage may vary though.)

There are various reasons editors may keep authors from doing what they want. 1. They have power and they want to use it. 2. They know what type of story sells, but are afraid to try another type in case it doesn't sell. 3. The editors has stories they want told, but don't have the time/skill to do it themselves. 4. Fear of offending somebody (higher ups, distributors, sellers, customers, parents of customers, self-appointed moral guardians, etc.)

except that sounds like it could have been better. It Also didn't have Shinji and Asuka.

@ Kou: It's possible that many stories that are restrained are done so for good reason. Imagine Tokyo Mew Mew as if it was Magical Girl Evangelion. That might be where the origional story was going for. I mean, some people, when in a dark place, just want to share it, and that's how we got Evangelion.

@ Jaggedclaw: The story's "Yuusha Gojo Kumiai Kouryuugata Keijiban", or, in english, "Hero Cooperation Union Exchange Bulletin Board". It's a gag story about a forum where hero's post about their problems and talk to retired hero's on an interdimensional forum. The subtext I brought up is in one or two of it's stories.

@KAM what is it with Editors in Japan and them keeping Authors from doing cool deconstruction stories? Except Evangelion's Editor, that dude should have restricted the hell out of that dude.

stop ruining them with your logic...

Yeah, Mew Mew had a number of dark/creepy elements under a sugary sweet coating. Two mad scientists who change young women without their consent into warriors who also work for them in their cafe. Yikes! I've heard that the author originally wanted the story to be much darker, maybe even going toward horror, but the editors restrained her.

@Kou: Well its not like she walks around with wings and broadcasts "i'm an angel". Of course if she did that, I think everyone would understand her name right away heh.
Jaggedclaw at 11:37PM, April 3, 2015
Huh. That takes magical girls fighting an alien invasion as well as my childhood to a darker place alright.
Darius Drake at 11:26PM, April 3, 2015
The answer is simple, and presented by at least one story that I've read. Basically, the implication in that story was that any and all people who get Transformation Powers get them PURELY for those who gave them their power's benefit, who are in league with the "Villians". If you look at the story again, this time under the assumption that the powers were given to the girls NOT to save their world, but to record their fights and monetize recordings of those fights in another dimension (ours) while allied with the Villians who also benefit, well, I wouldn't be all that surprised if it suddenly seemed MUCH, MUCH darker.

'reads description' yeah they are creepy. As for this for her trying to defend it here......does she know who she's talking to?
