i just realized that there hardly anything in this world (the main character's) that ISN'T alive at some point with the exception of the house, so this is a interesting revelation to mimic what InsolentOne said.

Plastic is a petrolium product, aka is made from oil. Oil is the remains of long dead biomass. So plastic comes from living things, though is a very long route.
