My personal, private joke is that every long work I undertake begins with the working title, “Revenge on Robert Jordan.” It isn't that I hate Robert Jordan (may he rest in peace), but I got frustrated with this method of perpetually introducing characters and plots which would veer off from each other until it was like he was telling 100 separate stories. There's a part of me that wants to make a story at once so compelling and so complicated that my readers are both addicted to it and frustrated by it. Just like I was with Robert Jordan. To be fair, though, the Kirth/Thaco/Viktorya plot thread is more of a Tad Williams device. A seemingly unrelated character is introduced and followed for a period of time until such time as the plot brings everyone together.
