According to many legends iron ranges from “resilient” to “impossible” to use magic on. These same legends also tend to relay on enchanted weapons that would almost certainly be made of iron. So I get the feeling it's only specific types of magic that don't play well with iron. Steve's shadow magic would fall into a different category, since he is somewhat unusual in magic circles as it is.

Poor goblins, they are going to have to learn what they've brought aboard their own ship.. Hopefully Nemo will follow this advice from his little brother, Steve doesn't need the distractions right now.

Best explanation I've ever heard is that Cold Iron, or Iron that's never been heated to be worked, still mystically connects with the fires at the heart of the Earth. That's why it damages Fey creatures only, because of their connection with nature. You might think it also grounds their magical energies into that fire, but that's my own idea. Anyway, Iron that's ever been forged, heated to malleable temperature or melted, looses that mystical connection because the heat releases the mystical heat of the Earth's core. As I said, best explanation I've ever come across. =)

Iron is deadly to fae. They can't touch it without being burned, nor cross it. However cold iron is also suppose to disrupt magic. Most magic weapons though aren't made from cold iron. They are made from steel, which is an iron alloy.

Perhaps those enchanted weapons have to be enchanted during creation. Who knows. I had khmaly's idea anyway - move a little through the shadow realm and back. The iron won't follow.

I thought that iron was supposed to HURT and DRIVE AWAY Fae. Personally, I suspect that it was something to do with magnetism.

Even if the iron would be impossible to use magic on ... and if we don't count the possibility he got out of the cuffs nonmagically ... why should iron prevent him to use shadow magic on his arms, making them NOT in the cuffs? Also, I never heard of iron being impossible to magic except fae magic. Is he fae? Hmmm ... as a dark elf, he might ...

Well he DID say he had been arrested before. Getting out of cuffs is one of the first tricks you learn ... Err not that I know anything about that *whistles with Steve*
