This is an old chinese proverb. For those of you unfamiliar with lotus roots, when you slice lotus roots, there's usually a few strings of thin fibers still hanging between the two ends. Its resilience to stay intact inspired this metaphoric proverb to describe human relationships.

Oha! Now I know what that strange-looking thing in my wok dish from last week was! A lotus root!
