We meet Kaycee's mother, or “mum” as they are called in Australia. She won't be showing up again for a loooong time. Also, on the wall, a pre-emptive introduction or another main character you can expect to meet in just a few more pages…

They're called "mum" in the UK, too. Except in the north of England where they're called "mam". Not sure where the US "mom" came from. I wonder if there are places that say "mim" or "mem". Seems a shame not to use [i]all[/i] the vowels!
