The Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel has a scene where a tank like Batmobile attacks a crowd of villians. It fires machine guns. Batman assures the reader that they are rubber bullets.
I always remembered that. Batman does not kill. Mist in this story is a shadow of Batman. This no killing rule may be a problem.

Speaking as a member of the military retired due to combat injuries, the only time we used rubber bullets was against civilians (not our own). Against enemy combatants we used live ammo. And no, I don't blame the other guys one bit for using the same against us. It's not like we were asking them out on a date.

I always though that this attempts to make heroes more good by making them "not killing" lowers credibility. Any villian worth sending superhero against deserve death sentence anyway. It's almost as bad as the fact that nobody tried to simply shot James Bond.
