In any event whatever caused the original trio to discover the red dragons abilities (though a clue to it they discovered on their own before they got to the reality shift point with Didi (who was at the time feeling rather blue) breathing ice, and considering that magic on Terra ESPECIALLY with untrained wielders but even with masters has been shown to behave in ways that reflect the user's emotion for example a page ages ago when Sox startled Spar or even when Spar and Stormy first got their powers and were in a state of emotional panic better yet, they're powers didn't calm down until after DE used the magic sedative.

And considering how it is in all the old timeline future scenes that include Star, and that future borrowing Summer's gang Spar had Didi act as a staff, not only is that staff reliable but it also might not be an entirely good thing for Spar to have right now, depending on however the original rider and two dragons learned that Didi had that ability, it may delay it or accelerate it, on one hand it may have been discovered by Didi taking a magical blast in battle and finding the power stored in her in which case her having the staff could cause it to happen sooner as she will be more likely to find reasons to test it, herself and her partners in combat. On another it could have been do to a MUCH smaller and more temporary version of what happened to Star, finding themselves with a bit more mana than they could control and Didi absorbing it better than Ty despite their size differences in which case the discovery of that ability will be delayed significantly.
