Actually, in the current comics, Peter Parker is doing pretty well. He's working at a place called Horizon Labs, creating different kinds of technology. They even allow him to work on stuff for Spider-Man, allowing two different alternate suits and a ton of gadgets. They don't know he's Spider-Man. They just think he's an ally of Spider-Man.

I've always thought Pete got the short end of the stick. He's supposed to be smart, but being as he's the only hero to actually spend most of his time in down and dirty fights (and didn't inherit a ton of money) he doesn't have the time to sit around and capitilize on his brains. Oh well, that's 'real' life for you.
