Chapter 4 - Page 12
DAJB on Dec. 30, 2007
Work on the page re-design continues. I've revamped the links area on the right and you can read more about that here.
Apart from that, all I really have to say is … party sensibly tonight, everyone. (Wow - there's a contradiction in terms!) Hope to see you all in the New Year!
Oh, and we also have a Character Study of Boo in the Shades forum now. It does contain a plot spoiler or two, though, so don't read it if you hate seeing things revealed before they appear in the comic!

I feel so bad for Sunil. This whole time he's had no idea what's been going on...
SympleSymon at 7:33AM, Jan. 28, 2008
So, she has a kind-side, too...guess that's just as well.
DAJB at 1:52AM, Jan. 3, 2008
Alana: That's what you get for making an excellent comic ... serves you right! Stig: Fear not - new page is already up!
alanajoli at 5:58PM, Jan. 2, 2008
Hey DAJB--wanted to thank you for putting C&A II in your side bar! We look very nice over there near Lora Innes's "The Dreamer" and Adam Black's "Kiss4K". :) Thanks!
Stig Hemmer at 12:28PM, Jan. 2, 2008
Oh dear, I have reached the dreadful point where I no longer can click "next" any more... Nooo!!! I think the word I am looking for is "addictive".
DAJB at 12:05PM, Jan. 2, 2008
Dream: Thanks. And welcome to Shades! Thip: Can it really be coincidence that Britain's influence in the world has been in steady decline as tea-drinking has given way to coffee? I think not! And, given what Stan has just done ... yeah - he's more of a man than I'll ever be, that's for sure! Alana: Originally Joyce and Maureen's lines were pretty inter-changeable. (The "you and whose army" line was originally Maureen's, for example). Over the course of the first couple of re-drafts, though, I started to reallocate them and the two women took on more distinct personalities. And, yeah - you can rely on Boo to set most people straight!

excelent work
thip at 9:37AM, Jan. 2, 2008
Oh, yes - a nice cup of tea has seen Britain through empire, world wars and even the most horrifying Ms. Marple murder mysteries ;o) I love this series - it's so quintessentially british. For my money, though, Stan IS a man, albeit an old-fashioned one : the gentleman species ;o)
alanajoli at 8:56AM, Jan. 2, 2008
Well, I'm glad Maureen kept her head while Joyce threw a fit. A man! Imagine! (A man in desperate straits who just helped one of yours? Ungrateful....) Glad Boo set her straight.

Dragon: Not been back to BVC? You shock me! ;-) Seriously there are two great Guest Comics (i.e. comics not by me!) there, that you've probably missed. The Lumbering Dead is a great slice-of-life title which is just so true to life it had me laughing out loud when I first saw it. And Thy Will Be Done is a new SciFi comic full of twists and turns by E.C. Nickel. Try them - they're good! JMT: I've just checked with Mrs DAJB who comes from the frozen north (of England) ... She's fully aware of "tough as old boots", too, so it seems to be pretty universal here in dear ol' Blighty - not just something soft southerners (like me!) grew up with! Happy New Year!
dragonrider at 5:57PM, Dec. 31, 2007
I have been waiting for this page to get here. In about three more pages it will start to be all new to me, I haven't gone back to BV to read more since you mirrored here.
jmt at 3:24PM, Dec. 31, 2007
Here in the good ole US we might say "tougher than boot leather." But you brits got the whole "old boot" line locked up. Great stuff. I am really happy that Stan didn't get turned into a woman by those thugs. Happy new years homie.
DAJB at 2:26PM, Dec. 31, 2007
seventy2: Oh good! I was hoping it was a "typically British" saying and it looks as if it is! LJS/Rockster: Thanks, guys.
seventy2 at 12:14PM, Dec. 31, 2007
i've never heard that saying...tough as old boots?
DAJB at 8:13AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Midge: We - ell, I could tell you but then I'd have to ... No, I wouldn't! Boo's full back-story will be spelt out explicitly in Chapter 6 and so I don't really want to place plot-spoilers here. If you can't wait that long, take a peak at the Character Study of Boo in the Forum! Adam: And in safe hands, too. Breathe easy!
TheMidge28 at 7:54AM, Dec. 31, 2007
stunning developments...and I looked up the historical figure advised previously. Real interesting and I see the tie in. So is there a relation to this figure in reality of the comic or just a monicker used?
Adam Black at 6:27AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Stan's rescued! I can breathe now.
DAJB at 6:19AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Imagine: Heh - you are a brave man indeed to risk crossing Joyce! Her heart's in the right place really, she can just be a little ... blinkered! cs3: I haven't been back to check the script but, from memory, I think this is the last chapter in which tea is actually offered. Make the most of it! (And thanks!) Beretta: You don't say that where you come from? Very common expression where I was drug up! (And a Happy New Year to you, too!)
Imagine at 6:09AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Leave that man dying! We have broken hearts! Pff.. women logic.
cs3ink at 5:53AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Tea does make everything better. Great page! One of my favorites so far. Well-written. Well-directed. Well-drawn.
Beretta40 at 4:31AM, Dec. 31, 2007
"Tough as old boots". Good one. Happy New Year!
DAJB at 3:36AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Harry: We could always give him a pony-tail, I suppose ... ;-P Many thanks for all your kind words and a Happy New Year to you, Mrs Q and little Miss Q! (Oh, and the guy who writes this loves your silly pages!) Peipei: Thanks. And, as for Stan, well ... he's in the best place to be looked after, so maybe there's hope yet! Sky: Who? Maureen? Aaaw, she's a dear! I see her as a kind of "house-mother" to the women cared for in the shelter.
harryq at 3:28AM, Dec. 31, 2007
oops... I'm incredibly observant, as an artist. That's how I almost missed the new links! I was wondering what Abt was talking about! Thanks! Still can't get over the fact that the guy who writes this, looks at my silly pages!
harryq at 3:22AM, Dec. 31, 2007
Ah, another fabulous step on our journey. I just realized why I'm so fond of Stan... He looks like me! Best of everything to both you and Harsho in the coming New Year and thanks for this exceptional adventure!
Peipei at 3:22AM, Dec. 31, 2007
This page is amazing :3 And I hope grandpa will pull through :(
