With the British, such "die bravely" commands sound incredibly unpretentious. At first, the BEF sent a few thousand more or less inexperienced soldiers to Calais as reinforcements, who put up a very brave fight and after a few days received the order from the high command: 'We can no longer support you or save you. But it's very important that you hold out to the last bullet. Because, hey, that's what a real gentleman does.
