Family reunion - better enjoy it while we can ;)
.
this page (and previous) tried heavy pencilling, but this one, in an attempt to save wrist strokes, I also tried lots of smearing and smudging (using a paper towl and my fingers); the goal was to try to sorta spread it out and make it look smoother…
.
Well, I abandon this experiment come the very next page
.
Thanks for reading everyone!

You seem to have had an ongoing struggle to find an art technique you feel truly relaxed with but it's interesting that despite all your variations the overall look is always still recognisably unique to this comic. It shows how professional you are though that despite your disappointment at times you never ruin a page!

@Peipei: Yeah, I've felt a bit guilty that I go so long sometimes without showing her family, esp. the kids... But that's kinda the point of what's happening. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about!
Peipei at 8:51PM, Feb. 17, 2015
Yay! Nice to see this reunion of Kimber, hubby and the kids! I couldn't have imagined going long periods of time without my mom like these two sports have had to throughout the story!
KimLuster at 7:06PM, Feb. 17, 2015
@Brogan: Thanks! I was satisfied with the general layout of the page - it's the smudgy technique I tried that I don't want to repeat :)
brogan68 at 6:36PM, Feb. 17, 2015
Nice page. That first panel is really nice.
KimLuster at 4:26AM, Feb. 17, 2015
@Ghosty: hehe are you reading ahead!
KimLuster at 4:26AM, Feb. 17, 2015
@plymayer: Thank you! My mom always warned me about heavy penciling - saying it leads to other things, and next thing you know you have little Arts all over the place, demanding your attention... *shivers* I shoulda listened!
ghostrunner at 2:15AM, Feb. 17, 2015
all she has to do is unleash the beast >_>
plymayer at 9:49PM, Feb. 16, 2015
Heavy pencilling? Sounds like some thing artists do on a date.
plymayer at 9:48PM, Feb. 16, 2015
Breaks my heart to see children missing their parents. Great page.
KimLuster at 2:19PM, Feb. 16, 2015
@VinoMas: Yeah, maybe my next story will be a comedy... Thanks!
KimLuster at 1:46PM, Feb. 16, 2015
@Banes: Hey, Jack let her see her family, just not touch them... that mean he... sorta-cares? And Carrots...! The Bane of many a Kid (and adult too) *haw*
VinoMas at 1:37PM, Feb. 16, 2015
What a heartbreaking page! Great drawings!
Banes at 1:30PM, Feb. 16, 2015
It's so touching and also sad to see the family sort of reunited (even if there's a sheet of glass or plastic between them. I hate carrots too, little guy!
KimLuster at 8:17AM, Feb. 16, 2015
@Tupapayon: Yeah, in RL I've always tried to be totally honest with the little ones, but it's really hard sometimes, with their sad faces.... I've made my share of empty promises... but also empty threats lol!
tupapayon at 8:14AM, Feb. 16, 2015
This page breaks my heart… I think Kimber tries to look serene in front of the little ones… don't make promises you can't keep… carrots… I like 'em, but everyday?!…
KimLuster at 7:49AM, Feb. 16, 2015
@Corntown: Wow! Thanks!!! Like many, I love Van Gogh, but I REALLY love him!!
CornTown at 7:27AM, Feb. 16, 2015
Whenever I see your art, it reminds me of Van Gogh's paint "The potato eaters"
KimLuster at 6:44AM, Feb. 16, 2015
@FC: Thanks! I bet chalk would be easier but chalk scares me! That last panel... yeah it was fun - I tried to get the face-smooshed-against-the-glass look! Little Dyson ended up looking like a little monster haha! I also noted I made the kids' heads a bit too small - it's kids' bodies that a much smaller... heads tend to be closer to adult size... oh well...! :D
fallopiancrusader at 6:38AM, Feb. 16, 2015
Good job in the first panel, capturing the tedium and oppression of the place.Chalk pastels can be easier to blend and smear. Sometimes, I will shave a pastel down with a knife, and then smear the resulting powder on with a paper towel. Good for skies and stuff. I bet you had a lot of fun drawing the last panel, with everyone's faces smooshed up against the glass :)
KimLuster at 6:30AM, Feb. 16, 2015
@bravo: I hate carrots! Whether whole, slice, mushed-up, or in a pie *blech*...! I tried those tortillon things but they didn't work so well on the colored pencils (too waxy maybe), but then neither did the fingers... I dunno... I've retried several things that I keep swearing I'll never retry, so I'll probably revisit this someday...!
bravo1102 at 5:21AM, Feb. 16, 2015
Don't blame the kid. The food is probably government institutional lowest bidder awful. Ever wonder where USDA grade D meat went? And are you certain that orangish mush really is carrots? Rather than using paper towels or your fingers find those little blending stumps and tortillons. You can get more exact shadows and blending. When I did pencils I used them a lot.
