Read an article where the article reporter seemed impressed by that info about the qubit, but never bothered to explain why it's a good thing or how it would work.

You can imagine quantum computing like this: you will start with quantum register filled with those qubits which are both 0 and 1, so the register is effectively holding all possible numbers. Then you do some computation and end up with register holding all possible RESULTS. If the computation is chosen correctly, most qubits in the result holds "normal" zeroes or ones, meaning it's usable result. And you've just completed exponential number of computations in the time one of them would take on ordinary computer. (Of course, this is simplification, quantum computers are not working exactly like that ... but it does explain why qubits holding both one and zero is something to be impressed about.)
