Freefall, yeah, the entire reason he was bed ridden while Elana took care of him was because he was recovering from the burns he sustained from being in the water in the first place. Also the water is said to have been directly blessed by the goddess that created the Undine race, Elana's race, the blue haired people. And since they are natural enemies of Ifrit, Rook's race, it causes him/them harm. Also the scars on Rook's body you see in this page are from his previous burns when he fell into the river.
