SS6 23 Curse of Carlingford 10
skyangel on April 2, 2017
The story so far: Since moving into the family home of her girlfriend Lucy, Sarah is convinced the house is haunted. At first she assumed it was Lucy's previous partner who died there in mysterious circumstances but now she is not so sure! An old couple who live nearby have just finished telling Sarah about the strange legend that surrounds the house.
You may be interested to know that Witch Bottles are a real thing and sometimes turn up when old houses have been demolished. Cunning men too have their place in history, especially around Canewdon where this scene is set.
Next Week: Sarah makes her way back to Carlingford…in the fog.
Have a nice week :)

Ha! I bet Sarah will run into that second bottle in the fog :(

Walking home in a dark fog. What could possibly go wrong (shudder)?
oldironside at 1:17PM, April 3, 2017
Beautifully drawn and coloured. You can feel the damp fog on your face in panel 4 and your heart sinking at the thought of leaving a warm but slightly musty room for a long walk in fading light. You've come a long way from the first episode. As a Hammer aficionado, I can appreciate the atmosphere and the presence of the late great Mr Cushing. Is there any way you can work Sir Christopher in? Or even the essential Michael Ripper?
skyangel at 5:00AM, April 4, 2017
Ironside: This is the last we see of Mr Cushing but I will see if I can pop Christopher in as a cameo at some point, probably non speaking tho. We have come along way too from a simple story about two schoolgirls falling in love. The stories have become more complex with each chapter as new characters and their personal problems have become woven into Sarah's life. This final chapter does feel really special to me because despite the dark tone and fantasy element it's still all about love and the quest for happiness which was my main thread from the very beginning.

Jeez...may a well chuck Bella Lugosi in the cast too ! B-)

I see Sir Chris playing the crow, and Hammer Films will produce!

Time to confront the mysteries that lie within.
skyangel at 4:51AM, April 4, 2017
Phantom: Yes, she is certainly about to do that!
moizmad at 7:40PM, April 2, 2017
I think I know where the witch bottle is (so does the crow) and Peter Cushing will play George in the movie version.
skyangel at 4:51AM, April 4, 2017
Mo: You're probably right but I don't want to encourage plotspoilers or I'll get told off! I think most readers would guess if they thought back over all the events at Carlingford but either way it's Sarah who really needs to work it out and she can't hear any of you!!! ;)
BearinOz at 7:37PM, April 3, 2017
Hey ! - they used a long-dead Richard Brrrton for 1984 with John Hurt !
DarkVisor at 6:48AM, April 3, 2017
You are saying the bottle is with George and his wife? The crow is sitting on a church (you can see it better in the second last panel) ... Sir Peter Cushing is, unfortunately, dead, so he can't play George (or Grand Moff Tarken) :(
DarkVisor at 11:37AM, April 2, 2017
Stick to the road Sarah, don't go chasing mysterious birds through the fields!
skyangel at 4:44AM, April 4, 2017
DV: The footpath is clearly marked by posts with arrows on, as long as she can see them. ;) Mo: If only Sarah was as sharp as you! ;) Talking of Cushing, I saw 'The Skull' just before Christmas which had both Cushing and Lee in which was a great delight for me as I love both of them enormously and this was a film I'd never seen before.
moizmad at 2:18PM, April 3, 2017
No, not with George and wife....it's pretty obvious where it is. And they can dig up Cushing for the role, a little make-up here and there...a body double..some CGI....

Dear Sky, I'm with Kim. After more than 40 years of watching monster/horror movies, I dont recall any thing about a witch bottle. I did find stuff on the internet, where there was a bottle much like yours in center panel. Great air view of house and creeping fog. Will Sarah will get lost in fog? Will she be saved by a raven? tommym
skyangel at 4:40AM, April 4, 2017
Tommym: While on holiday a few years ago I had the pleasure of visiting a museum of witchcraft, which I think is the only one in the UK. Apart from being a little creepy it was truly fascinating and just the sort of place to inspire a writer/artist especially as this was more fact than fiction.

that first panel is awesome work

Jerrie, Fred: Thanks :)

Yes indeed, gorgeous!

Love that first panel!! Wow!! Fascinating stuff about the Witch Bottle! I considered myself well-versed in myth, lore, superstition... and I've never really heard of one of these! Did a bit of web research - neato!! Again, this little tale was just wonderful, but I'd hate to walk home in a fog after hearing it!! :D
skyangel at 4:34AM, April 4, 2017
Kim: I felt it was worth pointing out as Becky assumed I'd just made it up and I naturally assumed other readers would do too. It is nice to be able to use something that doesn't pop up in mainstream ghost stories as I've had the advantage of using it for my own ends without it seeming corny.
BearinOz at 4:41AM, April 2, 2017
Just love the foggy panels ! ...ah, the "old pathetic fallacy" again. This time fog instead of the more usual thunderstorm B-) We'll accept the late excuses, as it IS a great page B-)
fredhedges at 12:24PM, April 10, 2017
I never heard the term "pathetic fallacy" before, so I did a little googling. I guess it was used as a perjorative by more "modern" writers of the later 19th century against Romanticism's use of inanimate objects to suggest the emotions of the characters (not meaning to imply that Bear is criticizing here). I think that here this device is perfectly fitting to the Gothic larger-than-life nature of our tale, as well as in keeping with the many references to Poe. If anyone put pathetic fallacy to good use, it was EAP himself.
skyangel at 4:30AM, April 4, 2017
Bear: Haha Funnily enough it was the fog that held us up this week. I'd tried it one way and Becky had tried another and then she showed me the original top panel before she had added her fog and it looked so fabulous that I wanted to preserve as much of it as possible, especially little details like the soft lighting reflecting off of the greenhouse.
