SS6 64 Ron's Confession 2

As Ron's confesses to his part in the events that ensured Laura stay away from Lucy, I felt it was important to show his motivations as well as his behaviour in this last segment as I think you'll find it more interesting. And I'm sure you can all guess whose on the other end of that phone! ;)
Infected Blood raised a good point last week when she observed that Sarah seems to have distanced herself from her feelings towards Lucy in favour of empathy towards how Lucy and Laura feel about each other. It is a very good point and maybe I should have had a page or two of Sarah caving into the idea that Laura is not only just still alive but also still quite possibly in Love with Lucy.
In response to that though I've always felt Sarah was well aware of something coming between her and Lucy from pretty much the start of their relationship. If you recall the hosepipe fight back at the Cranberry's when Sarah felt something was bothering Lucy, and again at their trip to Warwick castle when she noticed how easily Lucy's thoughts seemed to drift away from her, I think Sarah's been preparing herself for a fall for a long time, and as anyone whose had a broken heart knows, you do tend to hold new relationships at arms length until you feel safe in getting closer. Sarah's never really felt totally convinced that Lucy was totally comitted to her even when Lucy told her she was. There will be more on how Sarah's affected later on but for now at least, I feel the focus has to remain on Ron and Laura which won't take too long to cover.

I think in Sarah's next life she should become a private detective. She's mighty good at getting to the bottom of mysteries and she'd make a wonderful noir gumshoe.

Yeah, I sorta gathered Sarah's been slowly creating a buffer around herself, as if she senses what could happen when she sees this sleuthing through... But, it seems she's rather let the sleuthing itself fill in. Almost as if it consumes her. She'd make a quite good detective, methinks!! And yeah, I have a good idea who's on the other end of the line!!

Kim: I think I can run with that ;) Sarah's first concerns in the early days was that she felt she was unable to replace Laura in Lucy's heart just as she's had trouble letting go of Janey too, but at the point where she felt she was ready to let go and put her trust in Lucy, Nikki dropped that bombshell over the diaries which made Sarah angry at her as it was clear that Laura being alive would ruin everything. Since that point, I would imagine Sarah's been forced to pull back and keep her feelings in check until she knows what sort of a threat Laura now poses to her future. Plus.. Sarah never can let go of a good mystery even if it does involve putting her heart on ice to do so. ;)

No, I don't think I was a "tough cookie" B-) ...maybe just persistent. Didn't want to give up, despite being cheated on by all 4....and not being able to do the same. I'd admit to weak, before tough B-)

Bear: I think you have to be one very tough cookie to fall in love again too easily after a heart break. My first was a horrendous experience for me and I pretty much avoided anyone who I thought could do that to me again for several years as I was too afraid of ending up in that 'dark place' again.

DV: Yup, the Herbie she had when Sarah met her. Don't forget Sarah's car was the cute red mini. Lucy was after that too, but much later on. ;)

Dear Sky, Well it's kind of sad to see how the Sarah/Lucy relationship is turning out. How is Lucy going to react when she learns the truth? She just might have a nervous breakdown. Dad and daughter are so happy and now a call from Laura. Does she have something on Ron that she can ask him for more money?tommym

Tommym: I can't really reply to this as it's explained next page anyway but it's not looking good for the Sarah/Lucy relationship for sure. Lucy will find out the truth so all the emotional stuff on all sides will come pouring out soon and then we'll see how it works out for all involved, including Sarah :)

Oh, that's all very interesting! So, Sarah is indeed getting more and more distant from Lucy, although she still cares about her enough to help clearing this mess up. Personally, I don't think we really needed extra pages to see that - it's emerged quite naturally from how events are evolving, especially when we saw Sarah politely pushing her away in intimate times. Now I'm still wondering - what did Ron do? :)

IB and DV: The difficulty I faced in writing this was that I felt the Lucy/Laura mystery had to take precedence over the Sarah/Lucy relationship to avoid splitting the story in two. If Sarah had been so deeply upset at any point that she gave up on Lucy, she would probably have not cared what happened to Laura either so it was important to keep her attached as best as I could until the mystery is solved. I've had both girls pulling away at times, Sarah through fear of another broken heart and Lucy feeling she was betraying Laura's memory etc. so you are both right in how you feel there but just for clarity Ron has only ever tried to keep Laura away from Lucy and stop Sarah from getting at the truth. Lovely posts though guys and great to see how much you've absorbed over the years! :)

Yeah, the replies flow _upwards_ for some odd reason :P ... Hmm, have a bad memory, could only remember times Sarah was trying to get cosy with Lucy and being rebuffed ... Never meant to imply thought you meant Ron had anything to do with Sarah and Lucy's relationship, specially seeing how he admitted how happy (relieved?) he was when Sarah turned out to be 'genuine' in her feelings ... The phonecall still doesn't have to have anything to do with Ronnie, not directly

@Dark (It's really hard to reply directly to messages,I hope it's clear I'm responding to your message below): There were panels where Lucy was trying to get cozy with Sarah and Sarah refused to. As for Ron, he said he did something - I never implied he did something to anyone or tried to ruin Sarah's and Lucy's relationship :)
