He meant that their {mid-nineteenth century}existence of the "common" people was so miserable that the hope of a better afterlife was the best that they could hope to achieve.

Damn I keep getting 42 on this problem. On a serious note if it adds up to nothing then I suppose it's best do something you like or tolerate? Or you could say screw the rules and do what ever the hell you want to. Like you said what else is there?
