At Night All Mice Are Gray (page 3)
Fitz on Aug. 18, 2007
So, we get to know more and more about The Girl. As I mentioned before, she's not a fictional character, either. She's as real as can be - if I can say so about someone I met online ;) Aaanyway… Erica's one of my best friends, and my official Muse. And she's taking that role seriously. She keeps giving me inspiration for new espisodes and tells me everything I need to know for my writings. Not to mention teaching me ghetto talk! LOL! Also, it was her that gave me the idea for the comic and helps me develop the story.
So what's the origin of “A Bit Cheesy”?
Erica lives in New York, which - as some of you might know - is not exactly the cleanest place on Earth. So, every now and then I'd hear of the mice invading her apartment, making poltergeist noises in the middle of the night, successfully depriving her of sleep - and of her scheme to wipe the rodents of the surface of the planet. One time, I suggested that'd be a cool idea for a cartoon - a story of mice triplets called Die, Die and Die. She changed that to Die, Dead and Dying - as in Ed, Edd & Eddy.
The next day, I decided I'm doing a comic about them. Even though I hadn't drawn anything in years.
We talked about the basic premise some more. She wanted it to be an Itchy & Scratchy sorta thing. She'd be this Lara Croft-esque chick, bullets strapped to her leg and an eye-patch, and a gun with which she'd mutilate and massacre the menacing mice - by the names of Die, Dead and Dying. I loved the idea, and actually had ingenious character designs in mind for them.
But then, all of a sudden, I got a DIFFERENT idea.
I thought: ditch the uzis! Ditch the hate! What if one of the mice actually FELL IN LOVE with her? That's how I came up with the story of Mick trying to approach the girl and Ryan half helping him, half putting him down all the time. No bloodshed. No casualties. So, in the end, the only thing that was masacred and mutilated was the original idea. Hee hee hee :) She kind of hated me for that.
But now she loves the comic.
She's always the first one to see the complete pages. She also owns a custom made t-shirt with Mick on the front and Ryan on the back - and soon will get more A Bit Cheesy goodies. She finds both characters “cute”, but actually prefers Ryan. She likes his style. She even pictures him with a five-o'clock shadow. I asked her: You do realize it's a mouse, right?
On a side-note, I really love the sofa and the pillows in the big panel. It's hands down the best piece of shading I've ever done.
And as always, I encourage you to try and fish out the hidden motifs and not-so-hidden allusions :) I love putting them in all kinds of places and I'm happy when people notice them :D

That spider... small mice heads reflected in its eyes, low-res night-vision frames... scary!

EWWSPIDERKILLIT No, but this is actually looking to be a cool comic.
trevoramueller at 1:00PM, Oct. 16, 2007
Interesting use of "night vision," I assume. Something's going on here....

wow i know this might sound weird but i really love the shading on those pillows

Really nice page. Great lighting on this one, bit strange but my Drunkduck Alerter didn't tell me you updated...I only knew because you mentioned it on Energize... Anyway, great work as always, curious to see what the girl looks like.

I love that so much thought goes into ever aspect of your comic. Nothing is random, nothing is done without meaning. Great job. I noticed the cushions of course, I was trying to read into the magazines titles, but didn't come up with much. Had to read your response to my buddy Ersatz's comment ;0)

Well this is engaging. Can't really add anything that hasn't already been said. The angles, shading and general tension created by the spider make for a great read. You once said that my character Coyote reminded you a little of your mouse. I think it must be the nose.

I think you thought this over quite well, and the end result is beautiful. Not only is this a comic, but it's one helluva work of art--the artwork in itself is fantastic. You have a great start. I'm faving this because I really want to see where you go with it.

People who use symbolism make me sick with envy. I love the spider. It adds a very appropriate subtext of unease.

Hehehe! I thought the 'baby' would get your attention, I wanted to sound like a Hollywood director but instead just came off as being camp! The PQs weren't important, I just thought it was odd that you hadn't replied, as you're usually really quick to do so. They were just saying that I'll soon be using your backgrounds, thanks for the fan art (and also telling you that the fan art was up - I know for a fact you didn't get that one), and general ramblings. DD is against me! Grrrrrr!
Ersatz at 1:34PM, Aug. 23, 2007
Hey Fitz baby! You been getting my PQs?
magickmaker at 6:18AM, Aug. 22, 2007
Wow, you really knocked shading and tones out of the park. I'm glad you made the story changes that you made. It makes everything more interesting and gives , I don't know, texture? Whatever. It makes for a much more interesting story.

JMT: shame on you to get pissed right when I need your brilliant insight :P Don't disappoint me next time ;) Bocaj: the seat of my fan club's president is still vacant. Want it? ;) Nepath: au contraire, comics about rodents wearning jeans are quite common ;) Bek: you been drinkin' too, man? Ersatz: the magazines' titles don't matter as much as the fact that they're issues of different mags from subsequent months (an allusion to "step by step". The one that matters here is "Get a life" - a reply to Mick's optimism. It's actually a cropped version of The O Magazine issue "Get a Life Lift". All mags used in that panels are real. They're (starting from the top): Marie Claire (September), Cosmopolitan (August), Elle Decoration (July), National Geographic (May, June), The O Magazine (April). The newspapers are just a series of mishaps mixed with different sections of daily press. These come pretty much in pairs: Lifestyle - Attack; Entertainment - Murder; Sport - 70 dead; Love kills; People - missing. I'm not sure if I'm 100% happy with those, probably could do better if I thought more... The little easter egg here is that the articles you can see under and next to the headings are actually excerpts from Wikipedia's article on the game "Mouse Trap" Abt Nihil: for the idea behind the mags check my reply to Ersatz. As for the dialogues, I actually updated the page with some improvements in that matter. There were a couple of lines that annoyed me so I re-wrote them. As for the unified color themes and the cel-shading - it's funny, because I didn't originally intend either. I just tried them in the process of doing the first page and liked them so much that I actually redid the first couple of panels to fit to the new pattern. And it does look like I'm trying to make the backgrounds look like painted. I seem to be getting a hang of airbrushes and shading in Photoshop :) I'm having fun trying out new stuff.
Abt_Nihil at 8:52AM, Aug. 21, 2007
Great dialogue as usual... since you mentioned shading, I'll say that I adore your color schemes. The backgrounds have a painted style, the mice a cel-shaded look, it's like shots from animation... if animation ever looked that good. "Lifestyle Attack Entertainment Murder Sports 70 Dead Love Kills People (missing?)"... :D I'd like to have one of those Get A Life Magazines...
Ersatz at 2:56PM, Aug. 20, 2007
I like the Star Spangled cushions (America), and the "mountain" of magazines. "Love kills", the comparison of humans with spiders, also the fact that it's People magazine - all good! Get a life/beauty/Alaska (I'll ask her?), hmmmmmm..... interesting! You're a most intriguing chap, Mr Fitz!
Bekefel at 2:52PM, Aug. 20, 2007
I have a major headache! So any difficult thoughts are out of the question. Still, good shit.

Really like this comic. Very unique.

God, I love this art!
jmt at 7:09PM, Aug. 19, 2007
fantastic as per-usual. I love the style of your work. And I also appreciate the back story. However I have way to big of a hang over to go fishing for minutia. "ug! They got me, I'm not gonna make it! Go on without me..."
