The Insignificant Other
Fitz on Sept. 18, 2007
The new page is up, as promised. Which means Erica didn't kill me for posting her portrait before showing it to her. She's back from Boston and she's seen it already - but refuses to comment. Which could mean either that she hates it or - which is more likely - likes it but won't admit it, because she knows how much I want it :) Woe is me ;)
Anyway, new page is up! A new chapter - and a new setting. I actually could've left them indoors and have them observe the situation from the mousehole, for example. But that would've been boring, no? So there we are, watching her from outside through the window, in the rain - like plain old stalkers ;) I like it this way because I get to try out a new color theme - blue and yellow. I really like it how they stand out against one another and then sometimes they blend so well.
Like the previous episodes, this one is packed with minutiae, too. My favorites are the ripples, especially those to the right. Who can tell me what they stand for? It's tricky but it makes sense. Oh and the gargoyle. I love New York's gargoyles! I have a bunch of favorites. The funny thing is, this is not one of them. It's a statue taken out of a completely different context and put there in the role of a gargoyle. Anyone know who the fella is? The face is a bit distorted from the original. I was trying to make it look more like a chimera. And I still can't draw :P But the body and that thing he has on his head were left unchanged. Speaking of which, I spent quite some time trying to shade that little bugger. Tried and tested a bunch of methods, icluding cel-shading that I typically use to shade characters, but this one just looks better with soft, airbrush shading.
And I love it how Mick looks like a gargoyle in the last panel, too, sitting there in the rain.
I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar panel in some comic, aaages ago. Batman, most likely. Here the rain is coming down vertically. Kind of looks like a barcode :) And the background is black, just like Mick's silhouette, so you only see him because of the rain falling in the background. I like that effect. Rain was fun to draw in this episode. In each panel it looks different, marking the intensification of the downpour - and different angles. By far the coolest effect is the raindrops catching some light from the window in the third panel.
OK, enough yapping about the comic :)
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mick and Ryan made a guest appearance in Drunk Duck Zombies - a comic drawn by different artists, who borrow characters from their favorite DD comics and make them into zombies. So, my friend Bocaj, the author of Laugh Out Loud Zombies, made this hysterically funny comic with Hijuda's cat and my little pet rodents:
http://www.drunkduck.com/Drunk_Duck_Zombies/index.php?p=271168
Also, my friend Erstatz has a separate comic for fanart now (I'm jealous! I want fanart! Hehehe) I drew a comic for him:
http://www.drunkduck.com/Not_Ersatz/index.php?p=263759
Be sure to check the original version, too :)
I make another cameo in DGriff's “Zorphbert & Fred” 100th episode:
http://www.drunkduck.com/Zorphbert_and_Fred/index.php
And before I go, MY FIRST EVER FANART. This badass version of Mick was done by my friend JMT, the author of The Nonsandard Assembly:

Be sure to check out Bocaj's, Dawns, Ersatz's and JMT's comics - you'll find them all if you scroll down the comments.
Till next time! :)

Lemme' Take A Stab In The Dark Here: South American Angel/God Of Death? Like Charon Or The Grim Reaper? By The Way, Your Comic Style Is Very Noir.

Ah, the beginning of the great rain effects!
TheMidge28 at 4:56AM, Oct. 3, 2007
hmmm...I am a little confused...

Ack! Shame on me for leaving all those beautiful comments unreplied for so long! Sorry! Kilory & ShinGen: The first ripple symbolizes something sudden happening, i.e. the girl's arrival. The two connected ripples symbolize the her and her guest. The last bunch of ripples kind of looks like an ampersand (the "&" sign), signifying some sort of emotional connection between them. As for the gargoyle - that's Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec got of death (hence the line: looks like Death). Google up pictures of him and this one is one of the three versions I came across, and my favorite. Yeah, those were tricky, I know! Bocaj: No problem :) My pleasure, actually. It WAS my first official fanart, in a way, so that makes it pretty special! Tantz_Aerine: Yeah, the silence is the key here. I was actually wondering how they are able to talk in the middle of this downpour ;) And the funny thing about Ryan always laughing at Mick's scrawny posture is that they're anatomically and physically identical - save for the fur color and the eyebrows. The exact same height, weight, etc. Mick seems skinny, but Ryan isn't any more muscular - he just hides the fact under his baggy sweatshirt. Amy: That has to be THE most unique compliment I've ever heard! I'm very flattered :) Bek: Shame on you! ;) Make sure this won't happen ever again :P See you right here in two weeks time, my friend!

Tragically, I cannot place either the gargoyle or the ripples, unless the purpose of the ripples is to accentuate the rain, and the emotional connotations it carries. Even without the additional dimensions the comprehension of those things would add, excellent installment. Your art and writing always work together so harmoniously to create a mood...

Sometimes your pages make me feel like I'm reading a Batman comic. This is a good thing.
Bekefel at 10:30AM, Sept. 20, 2007
I always miss the updates and it makes me feel guilty. D:
antcomics at 7:52AM, Sept. 20, 2007
Your comics just have a groovy feel to them. I feel calm when I read them. Kind of like...valerian root! But without the steenky. :D
Bocaj at 6:30PM, Sept. 19, 2007
Oh, and thanks for plugging my DD zombies entry!
Tantz_Aerine at 1:56PM, Sept. 19, 2007
This is really very nice. I like the sense of silence in it. I also like the last quip about the scrawny guys. There's a t-shirt about thin, scrawny guys and how girls dig 'em. ;)
Bocaj at 1:24PM, Sept. 19, 2007
Again great art. I really like the third panel, for the reason you mentioned.
ShinGen at 12:23PM, Sept. 19, 2007
Woah I've somehow missed this little gem. I love your work, it's really deep and funny. It caught me off guard when you revealed the heroine was a mouse. Awesome job. As for the ripples... I remember you said they were on different wave lengths? I can't help but to put those two together for some reason. Anyways great work and you are now an official fave.
Fitz at 11:24AM, Sept. 19, 2007
Harry: Might make it sooner than on Sunday/Monday, which is my usual update schedule, as I got 2 weeks off from work. Hope it'll be worth waiting for :) D0m: Yeah, poor fella... As an author, I have to have more mishaps in store for him to keep the story rollin, but as a person, I feel sorry for him, too. As for the comic, I think I update too rarely, and I always went live at latenight hours so I only get a * for a couple of hours. Luckily, this time I updated much earlier, so I get more views and more new readers :) Nepath: I actually used the same trick as in the second page of the first episode, just this time I didn't make it so cartoony. And I like it that way much more. JMT: Mickey Mouse? Why haven't I thought of that. It's not actually it, but that's intriguing. What it is, however, is an ampersand - to signify the mysterious two being a possible couple. As for the gargoyle, Ryan's line: looks like death - is a big hint. Still doesn't give you the answer on a silver plate, but you have a clue. Also, gargoyles are mythological creatures... Aaand America is a Latina. So you should know where to look :) Abt: Awww don't be so hard on yourself, buddy :) I think it's just that my riddles are becoming a bit over-sophisticated these days. As for the eye-brows, I try to use them to say things without using words. I do the same with hands, though most of the time it's just very simple gestures. I'm not a body language specialist. Dawn: Check out the hints I gave to JMT right above :) And thanks a bunch for the cameo! Too bad I'm almost completely hidden ;) Ersatz: I'm both excited and terrified to see my pet rodents discover the joys of dysentery! ;)
Ersatz at 10:57AM, Sept. 19, 2007
Bugger! Can't place the gargoyle fella or the ripples' significance. Sorry old boy, feel ftoopid! Great page as always though, and I will repay the fan art one day, I promise. Thanks for the link to the page! :)
jmt at 9:51AM, Sept. 19, 2007
The one on the right looks like Micky Mouse,I thought that was a bit obvious, but since your hounding me! he-he. As for the gargoyle I am not sure. I saw a draft of it on a fourm when you posted it and I have sort of been thinking about it.Besides looking like a wierd monkey version of Darth Vader, I am sort of clueless. sorry home slice.
dgriff13 at 9:38AM, Sept. 19, 2007
I know I recognize that gargoyle guy from somewhere... the pose especially. You're getting better and better! want some fanart? or maybe a cameo? Check out Z&F's latest update!!!
Abt_Nihil at 8:49AM, Sept. 19, 2007
Sorry, as always I can't solve your enigmas... so I'll have to wait for smarter people to comment. Great lighting on this page, the yellow matches wonderfully with the dark blue tones. Nice eyebrows in the second panel too ^^ Stalkers are a sad bunch.
jmt at 8:13AM, Sept. 19, 2007
I like the yellow frame where Mick's hand is pressed against the window as he looks in.
Nepath at 5:12AM, Sept. 19, 2007
i love the way you have represented the water ripples
D0m at 4:41AM, Sept. 19, 2007
I feel bad for him... :-( And I'm surprised I never ran across this comic before. I love the art style. :-)
harryq at 4:39AM, Sept. 19, 2007
I can't wait! Stunning work, again!
