The Insignificant Other (page 2)
Fitz on Sept. 28, 2007
The comic just reached its first milestone - the 10th page! Wootations! Dance, drink and rejoice everyone - because it's not like I'll hit 100 in the next 10 years ;) Also, as you may have noticed, this time the update is here sooner than usual - the “usual” being the wee hours of a Sunday night. This is chiefly due to the fact that I got two weeks off from work. I get restless when I have too much time on my hands, as a result of which 90% of my time (regardless of how much that may be) is devoted to some sort of creativity. Thus, I posted 3 new pages in the past two weeks and got down to touching up an old novel of mine. Thought I'd write a short story and finish translating another one into English. BUT sometimes I do lie down and relax. So I've been making up for not reading much over the past few months. I just read “The Truth Hidden in The Eyes” by Giorgio Faletti. Absolutely LOVED it. Aaand I got myself the widely trashed Smashing Pumpkins' “Zeitgeist”. And what can I say? LOVE IT. Of course it's nothing like the “old” Pumpkins. But that ain't coming back. The last time I heard of James Iha, he was touring with A Perfect Circle, and the last time of D'Arcy, she got busted for crack possession. Meanwhile, this album is really fun to listen to, with a bunch of droolworthy riffs and unusual instruments. At times it sounds like something straight of the 70's or 80's, and sometimes like Deftones, one of my favorite bands ever. Good stuff!
But I digress… Back to the comic itself…
I actually got the idea for this page pretty much upon sitting down to start working on it. This episode was supposed to be shorter (and originally the whole comic was supposed to consist of one page long episodes - so fo figure). But then I thought I was kind of getting away from the original format of this comic - that is, showing very little or nothing of the characters themselves and focussing on the environment instead. So this time no cute rodents in sight ;) Instead, you get rain, rain, rain and more rain :P And yay for me, I actually figured out a cool method of getting a rain-like texture. Actually, I learned a bunch of new tricks with this episode. I always do, with each page, but I think this page is really artsy. Half like a painting, half realistic.
As always, there was a lot of background research behind it. That's an actual street sign in the 4th panel, didn't change the names of the streets. And the car is a fiat linea - although I really and truly suck at drawing cars, and I still suck at drawing in general, so it looks like poo. But with nice shading ;) And I was REALLY tempted to use the original referrence photo I used to draw panel one. But some part of me refuses to use something I didn't draw myself in the comic. Sooo, being the stubborn mule that I am, I drew the damn thing myself, dot after dot after dot :)
OK, enough of me talking :) Hope you liked this week's installment. Now, let the Hunt For Minutiae begin! Hope the contestants aren't hungover this time *coughtjmtcought* ;)

Cute little story so far! I'm enjoying it inmensely. Great art too. I absolutely love the rain, especially the way you make the light shine off of it.

I really, really like the rain next to the car...

Ackkk! How did I miss this! How canya ever fergive me? I'm a bad bad fan... :op Some comics slip under my radar somehow--someway...I think I just have too many faves to try and keep up with! Very cool page, Fitz!

Your comics are good.
Fitz at 8:06AM, Oct. 3, 2007
As always, I'm late with the replies. Sorry for that! It's just that I'm back to work this week and I feel like blaaah. I fall asleep at 10pm tops. And it looks like I might be having a mild conjunctivits :\ Aaanyway... Jeff: I think you missed the previous page last time you checked the comic. But that way you got a double treat this time. And so did I, since I somehow missed your previous update, too. Oh well, all's well that ends well :) Bocaj: Not showing them has become a means of expression in a way, and something that makes this comic a bit different. It's not that I actually don't like showing them - but I just don't want to draw ten panels with the same angles and the characters in identical positions. If, however, there is actually some action, no reason to hide them. It's just that this episode is very static. Dawn: Not sure which would be my favorite off the album - but Doomsday Clock is one of them, and if United States is the 10 minute long one, then so is that one. But then again, I don't think there's but one song on this album that I don't like! And I'm so jealous You'll get to see them live! :-O Nepath: Thanks :) I want to try some new weather effect next time. It's either gonna be raindrops or lighting - or both! I also want try and draw smoke/clouds of steam. Bek: I definitely should, as I do realize some of the rain effects are veeery far from perfect. Just didn't know there was a tutorial about rain, I wasn't following the tutorials much. So thanks for the heads up :) Trevor: Yeah, more rain - and some extras :D So watch this space! Midge: It's ok, it might be a little confusing - so I sent you a PQ with the explanation. Hope that helps. And welcome to the comic, btw :)

I had read through and the art is really good...but after the page where the girl is revealled...I got lost. the art is really good and I hope I am not being dense but I really would like to know what is going on...
trevoramueller at 1:22PM, Oct. 2, 2007
I said it on the forums, but I'll say it again here: I love your coloring of the rain by the taillight. When you responded to my forum comments, you said you had more of the same in store, so I'm excited to see where you're going with this.
Bekefel at 11:55AM, Oct. 2, 2007
Hey man. Thats some nice rain effects you got there! You should check out the rain tutorial, it shows you a way to get like a misty feel on top of the objects. So then it really looks like the rain is pattering on it. I believe its from SilentKitty if I'm not mistaken. ;) Don't get me wrong, you've did very well here. I just wanna double the awesome mate. :D Great work as always.
Nepath at 1:36AM, Oct. 2, 2007
fantastic page, you have a real knack for rain effects...Excellent work.
dgriff13 at 9:17PM, Oct. 1, 2007
P.S. REALLY love the rain effects and the car in the last panel.
dgriff13 at 9:16PM, Oct. 1, 2007
oops, missed this update. Nice tho. Good job on the street signs. Love the Pumpkins! Have tix to see them at a sweet theater in Philly! Wooooo! "Doomsday Clock" and "United Sates" are my favs off this album.
Bocaj at 7:13PM, Oct. 1, 2007
Love: The bottom of panel one. The umbrellas looking like diamonds in panel three. As well as the white and red light on the rain. GREAT solid page. Also, I didn't know the goal of this comic was to not show the characters, but I've always felt that was a, if not the, major contributing factor to the feel of the comic.
Coyotejeff at 12:11PM, Oct. 1, 2007
What the? TWO updates? Bang Bang! Just like that? Cool. I just keep loving it buddy. It looks like itââ¬â¢s all been said already. Boy, do I understand how a story can change mid-writing. Iââ¬â¢m not sure Iââ¬â¢ve ever seen a project of mine stay the same from concept to fruition. My $0.02 on the second panel. Its powerful.

Kilroy: Usually the part of work that makes me ask myself time and time again how I actually manage to do the comic is the initial stage - the pencil art. In this episode, only the car was hand-drawn - and I swear, when I scanned it and looked at it, it looked more like a bastard child of a buggy and an amphibia than a car. One of my biggest weaknesses is proportions - and this time I really messed up. You don't actually get to see that, because I adjusted the proportions on photoshop and it looks about right. But it's still not right. Look closely and You'll see it has no door handles, and the rear lights look huge because I forgot to separate the blinkers from the actual rear lights. And now I'm too lazy to correct that ;) JMT: Keith McCleary actually suggested the same to me. I actually tried bolding, when I first started the comic, but it didn't stand out enough in this font, so I dropped it. I was considering italics, later, but somehow never used them, in the end. As for placing the balloons, it's still more about placing them along some curve rather than reflecting the pitch pattern, it's just that occasionally I use it for the latter purpose. Most of the time it's just that the "snake" itself looks nice. Abt_Nihil: It's just six panels - so unless you live in some odd-shaped room, it should have four walls, a ceiling and a floor. So I can make five prints and make one of the panels into a carpet ;) How about the one with the ripples? As far as the car is concerned, look at what I mentioned in the reply to Kilroy's comment ;) And that panel happens to be my favorite, too. It was complicated, but fun to do - and the rain effects weren't all that hard to achieve, either. As for the Pumpkins - I love it and I'll stick to that :) There's a whole bunch of cd's that have come in for severe trashing and are at the same time my favorites. I love the latest Deftones cd. Or Tori Amos', for example.
Abt_Nihil at 8:20AM, Oct. 1, 2007
A-ma-zing. I'd frame each panel and hang it on a wall of mine. If I had that many walls. I agree with Kilroy and I think you're just fishing for compliments when you're pointing out your weaknesses... that car looks so wonderful. I'm really jealous. Amazing details everywhere I look... the one effect I like best is the car lights being reflected on the rain drops. Oh, and it's good to hear from someone who's NOT bashing the new Pumpkins LP.
jmt at 2:17PM, Sept. 30, 2007
Looks great. I like the second frame. It is logical to have it on this page, since you started it before. In the way of adding intonation and pitch, did you ever think of using italics, or bolding words or parts of them? That way you can free your word bubbles up to walk your reader through the page. I love the rain, and use of red.
Kilroy at 1:01PM, Sept. 30, 2007
If you're such a "bad artist," what does that make the rest of us? The last panel with the lights and the rain... you've got no right to complain. And you do such a lovely job highlighting what they're saying without actually introducing anything artificial.
Fitz at 6:10AM, Sept. 30, 2007
Tantz Aerine: yeah I know what You mean. It does look artificial. It's the particular photoshop filter I used to make it, which is Plaster in Sketch filters group. It just makes all flat surfaces above the silvery background black. I might try and mess with transparencies and see how that works. But when I look at it the way it is, I actually like it this way. For me, it kind of depicts the intensity of the downpour. A question of taste, I guess :) As for the speech bubbles, I'm usually trying to make them form an arch of a "snake". Sometimes, I try to reflect the intonation/pitch pattern by placing the bubbles higher for explamations and lower for subdued voice. Ersatz: red will be getting more cameos in the nearest future. I love the atmosphere it lends to the blueish pages. And the first panel happens to be Erica's favorite too, so you'll have to... err... share the dish. ShinGen: Yeah I was trying to make something special out of every panel. Luckily I had the time for that. Now I'm worried how I am gonna beat that with the next page. I'm always trying to push the artwork a step further each time. But oh well, we'll see :)
ShinGen at 5:14PM, Sept. 29, 2007
Man every panel is amazing in this page. I love the first panel and the dialouge is great, although the one thing I have to say is that I agree with Tantz. The puddles need a small amount of work. I think fiddling with the transparency would probably fix the problem more or less but idk. It all looks really good from here mate and I'm glad to see an update so early. ^_^ CONGRATS on 10 pages too btw!
Ersatz at 10:06AM, Sept. 29, 2007
Happy 10th birthday, Fitzy! And congratulations on making it a belter! Love the use of the red umbrella and traffic lights to reflect the dialogue! And the 1stpanel looks so good I just want to eat it..... OUCH!!! CONCRETE WOUNDS!!
Tantz_Aerine at 9:54AM, Sept. 29, 2007
Very nice page, setting the mood very well. I love all the panels and how you have placed the speech bubbles to denote motion even if we do not see anything (save the rain) moving. Well done! As a minor suggestion, panel 2 seems a little artificial whereas all the rest are greatly rendered in the mood you are building. Might I suggest a little less black lines for the ripples of the raindrops, and perhaps a bit more blurring, and maybe even some more transparency, to make them seem three dimensional against the puddle water? That's just a suggestion though. The page works just as well the way it is now! And hurray for the first 10 pages!
