The Insignificant Other (page 3)
Fitz on Oct. 13, 2007
Wow, it's barely 6pm and I'm done with the page. Took a while to do! Worked on it every day since Monday, and from dawn till dusk yesterday and today. Oddly enough, this time it wasn't because of me weeping: “I'm a faaaailureeee!” It was just… a lot of work! It's getting kinda hard pushing the artwork that one step further every time. This time the milestone for me was the panther (yup, that's a panther, btw). My models for it were a bunch of Pittsburgh panther statues. Erica noted that it also looks like the ThunderCats logo. As unintentional as it was, it's true! And it turns she loved ThunderCats back in the day, just like I did :) Aaanyway… Also, I followed Bek's advice and took a look at SilentKitty's tutorial about rain effects - hence the neat looking mist around the edges exposed to the downpour.
And then it stopped raining. And fireflies showed up.
Were you surprised? I know I was! LOL! It was one of these spontaneous ideas I got just yesterday. I figured that without the rain it'd be kinda empty all of a sudden. Not to mention there wouldn't be much to aim the “camera” at while the rodents converse. Thus: enter Lampyridae! They're not very likely to go wandering through Manhattan - even though they can be seen in Central Park. But oh well, they glow yellow light, and I needed yellow. And besides, who cares about realism in a story about two mice wearing jeans and drooling over a human girl? :P
A girl who's going to kill me when she reads this episode :P
She's away in Boston again, so I still have a couple of hours to live. I didn't consult the script with her, so the last line on this page is going to be as much of a surprise/shock/horror to her as it was to you. Even though she might have a clue. She actually asked about something related to it, before. Anyway, it's going to be hard to explain the joke next time if she rips my head off ;) So keep your fingers crossed. And don't worry, kids, it's nothing x-rated :)
Btw, speaking of gruesome death… Did you know fireflies were poisonous, even deadly? Yup. One little bugger, not even an inch in size, can make a lizard kaput! And the beautiful light glowing from their abdomen is actually a warning signal for any beasties stupid enough to try and take a bite. Most animals - like frogs, for instance - have orange, yellow or red bellies to let everyone know they're poisonous. Fireflies developed this nifty FX, instead. The light also serves them to recognize their own kind. Different breeds of fireflies have different signal patterns. Recognizing one's own is crucial to… staying alive, basically. Because fireflies are canibals. Females will even fake another breed's signal pattern to lure a male to dinner. The main dish being him!
Now you'll never look at fireflies the same way ;)

Ohhhhh! dirty thoughts....but ive already seen the next page. nicely done though

Abt: They did? Then I might get my hands on it. After I'm done watching all the "24" DVD's :) There was also a short indie ThunderCats movie - looked really awesome! Phil: Yup! Quite the shocker, isn't it? F_Allen: Damn English for its spelling rules - half of which comes from the damned ancient Romans and half from greedy medieval printers, who made words longer because they were paid per letter! Otamie: Speaking of interactivity, I sometimes thought it could use a little soundtrack or ambient sounds - or an animated gif here and there. But alas, that's not feasible. Magickmaker: Thanks! And yeah it does look like every episode gets more comments than the previous - but I'm still nowhere near, say, Ozone, who gets like a hundred comments per page :| LOL! But the funny thing is, he manages to reply to them all! Trevor: I used a similar effect in the newest page, too - alas, the last page of rain effects for a while.
trevoramueller at 7:20AM, Oct. 22, 2007
You're talking about panel 3 the wet window pane? Yes, that looks great as well!
magickmaker at 5:26PM, Oct. 19, 2007
Oooher, I really like the shading effects! (Gosh, you get a lot of comments!)
Otamie at 1:42PM, Oct. 19, 2007
this is like an interactive piece of art, i love the way the story is told andthe backgrounds are superb! keep up the great work!
F_Allen at 7:21AM, Oct. 18, 2007

phillip_the_tortoise at 7:19PM, Oct. 17, 2007
HE IS A SHE ooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Abt_Nihil at 12:23PM, Oct. 17, 2007
Yes, they DID release Thundercats on DVD! There was a revival a few months ago... they even had new comics and all that :D
Fitz at 9:59AM, Oct. 17, 2007
So... Erica didn't kill me ;) So now I can reply to all the lovely comments :D Nepath: Some of my readers wanted more mice in the comic, so there's more shots with them this time. In some future episodes - more action-packed than so far - they'll be in the spotlight most of the time. Trevor: The updates are only highlighted till midnight, not till the next time the reader logs in. I hate this mechanism, I think each comic should be highlighted for 24 hours since the update. But oh well, what can you do? Aaanyway, happy you liked the rain effects. My other favorite is the wet windowpane. It's a simple effect but looks nice. ShinGen: Hands are one of the few things I'm comfortble drawing. They're a tricky thing but once you have the structure figured out, they're easy :) Harry: you're TOO kind! And I'm still totally jealous about your drawing skills! D0m: Great to see you around! As for the story, it's going in maaany interesting places, of which only Erica and I know for now ;) But I promise some good times! :) Jeff: I do wonder if anyone did :) And I wonder if they ever released ThunderCats on dvd... Abt: Mick's not really disgusted. He meant to say something like "unfair", but Ryan finished it for him. I love making fun of humans through the eyes of mice :) Of course I've seen the Grave of the Fireflies :) A bunch of times, even! Loved it so much! And I was constantly thinking about the anime as I drew the fireflies. Also, I think my mix of cel-shading and soft shading comes from my love for anime style.
Abt_Nihil at 1:44AM, Oct. 17, 2007
The panther looks great! I'd watched Thundercats back in the day, although now I'm not so proud of it anymore :-D but I recognized the similarity... it's stylized similar to the TC logo, I think, although I have no clear memory of it. I like how you showed the wet window at the mention of saliva... I'm playing more the Mick part here, with being disgusted at the mention of saliva :-D well, not really, but I understand too well. My favorite has to be the hand in panel 5... so dramatic and emotional. The firefly's great too (ever watched Grave of the Fireflies? It's the only thing coming directly to my mind when thinking of fireflies), plus I love your mix of cel- and soft shading.
Coyotejeff at 2:30PM, Oct. 16, 2007
Oh you so Totaly got me dude! I did not see it coming. PS. I also loved Thundercats
D0m at 1:19PM, Oct. 16, 2007
This has been faved. I wanna know where it's going. I can see you becoming a master of your art style.
harryq at 6:36AM, Oct. 16, 2007
You darn right it did!!! just like all the rest of your pages. I feel like I'm on the artists' short bus!
ShinGen at 5:04PM, Oct. 15, 2007
The first panel and the fourth panel rule. I can't draw hands to save my life but you did a great job on it. I also like the new rain effects and the surprise there at the end. Awesome work, probably your best page yet.
trevoramueller at 9:09AM, Oct. 15, 2007
Love the first panel, with the rain hitting the statue. Why did my favorites list not tell me that you updated....!
Fitz at 8:14AM, Oct. 15, 2007
D0m: thanks :) I'm definitely sticking to cel-shading on the characters, although I'm trying to introduce more and more soft shading here and there. And I love playing on the contrast between darkness and light in this comic. Ersatz: Never seen a firefly, either. And I used to think they looked nicer, when I was a kid. But bugs in general don't look nice, anyway ;) As for the hand, I modelled it after my own. And as far as the minutiae are concerned - try to figure out what Mick's and Ryan's poses in the bottom row mean. That one's tricky. Dawn: Yeah I checked the logo and it doesn't look exactly like it, but there is some similarity. Didn't occur to me until Erica mentioned it, either. And I'm laughing at my own romantic attitude here, too. I think I'm part Mick, part Ryan. Mick is me of a couple of years ago, and Ryan is the experienced side of me, with some extra irony and cynicism. Harry: Did the page leave you speechless, my friend? ;) Hehehe just kidding! Amy: Thanks! Actually I'm a bit bothered by the second from the last panel, I think I could've done it better, but not quite sure what's wrong with it. But it'll pass for now :)
Nepath at 8:01AM, Oct. 15, 2007
really nice page. I love how this story is told with the rare shots of the main characters. Very original.
antcomics at 7:52AM, Oct. 15, 2007
Those fireflies are nice! Great looking page today!
dgriff13 at 5:18PM, Oct. 14, 2007
cool twist here. I loved the T-cats when I was a kid! The staue does look vaguely like the logo, although not the first thing I thought of, oddly. LOL, "all you do is sigh and gasp"! nice. Looking forward to seeing where this goes...
Ersatz at 3:43PM, Oct. 14, 2007
Brilliant page and I lurve that panther! (I did wonder if there was a ThunderCats reference/influence there). The fireflies are top-notch, not sure if we have them in the UK, I've certainly never seen one, they look like such groovy little characters.... despite their deadliness. Also love the hand on glass/climbing glass wall bit - all of your minutiae are very clear in this one and worked wonderfully! Keep it up, Fitz... if you don't get killed! ;)
D0m at 2:07PM, Oct. 14, 2007
I love this cute, cel-shaded art. :-) You work well with dark colors.
Fitz at 1:45PM, Oct. 14, 2007
Ersatz: Thank ye ;) Anticipating more, then :) Midge: Glad that cleared things out a bit. Also, the fireflies are a symbol of rules of attraction/laws of nature here, i.e. the things between a man and a woman. Tantz_Aerine: Thanks! I can't wait, either ;) Not sure whether I'll make the next page in two weeks or sooner. Depends... mostly on just how lazy I'll be next week! ;) JMT: Hey there! No minutiae hunting today? Or did I already say everything, myself? :) Bocaj: Not necessarily disgusting. Just way too affectionate for Mick to handle. And I'm not saying a word about the rest, hee hee - you'll see, in due time :)
Bocaj at 12:02PM, Oct. 14, 2007
What were the humans doing that is so disgusting? Lesbian, eh? Or is it going to be that she is single and that that is just a friend, and the mice don't understand? I'll have to wait to fond out. I love the glowing effect of the fireflies, and I'm glad you read that tutorial, the mist is nice. I hope you live to make another comic.
jmt at 11:53AM, Oct. 14, 2007
Nice page, I liked the panther and the stunning revalation!
Tantz_Aerine at 11:40AM, Oct. 14, 2007
That first panel is STUNNING! I really like the writing in this, and I did do a double take on the last line, but can't wait for more!
