The Insignificant Other (page 4)

Yes, it's a dog. A cute, little doggie. Of course! What else did you think she was?! Bunch of perverts! :P Anyway, without further ado - meet Sophie, the killer chihuahua ;)
It's just a splash page this time. Looks like it became a pattern that chapters end with splash pages. It wasn't intentional - but as long as it looks good, it's all good :) Next page - and a new chapter - coming up next Sunday, most likely. Unless I start enjoying slacking a little too much ;) This week I spent some quality time on non-artistic activities - or should I say, passivities :P I just got the 4th and 5th season of “24” on DVD, and I watch 4-5 episodes a day. Last night I stayed up an hour longer than intended just to see how things go after one truly dramatic cliffhanger. I'm halfway through the first set, so there's still a lot of real-time goodness ahead of me. So my artistic projects might have to wait till I'm done :)
Speaking of which, I came up with a new idea for a comic just last week :D If you're following Heroes Unite here on DD, you might have a clue what it'll be about - but I'm not gonna say anything more :) Aaanyway… I was supposed to write last weekend (which is my mode of work: one week for the comic, one week for the book), but I ended up brainstorming, doing background research, developing the characters and the story all day. For now, I have a logo done and a bunch of nifty fonts, all the rest is in my head for now. I'm not sure when I'll start working on the comic. “A Bit Cheesy” is still my priority. And I'll need to get more comfy with pencils. Not to mention TONS of background research :) It's going to be a different style - more realistic as far as the looks of the characters are concerned, and more complex shading. So it's going to take a while. But that gives me time to develop the story itself. Anyway, I'll let you know about any progress in that matter :)
See you next time!

Your right I did miss an update...Hmmm Great page - I love the expression on the dogs face and especially the rain effects down the glass. Top notch! As for Fearless, I did receive your logo desgin and I have reconfigured the exising logo into a similar design. Thanks for that. Anyway back to ABC - Excellent page as always, can't wait for the next one.

Ren Hoek is an Asthma-hound chihuahua ( if I remember correctly, which is entirely up for grabs). I used to watch it with my kids. Really. They were teeny-weeny.

Trevor: Isn't it? :) The cuteness of rodents might be disputable. But put a baby chihuahua in your comic and everyone's bound to go: AWWWW :) Jeff: We can only hope Ryan doesn't fall for Sophie now ;) As for splash pages, I actually started to like the idea enough to make it a regular pattern. It's fun to make them. Kilroy: I think the right word would be "silly" :) I actually had my doubts whether this idea wouldn't have been too childish for my readers to appreciate. It does make sense on some level, though, so I decided to go for it :)
Kilroy at 8:06PM, Oct. 30, 2007
I wish I could express how clever it is to have the mice, who are operating in the context of interspecies relationships, misinterpret what was going on with the dog, but there just aren't words for it.
Coyotejeff at 2:00PM, Oct. 30, 2007
Theirs the problem with interspecies things. The boundaries are confusing. What can I say. It's beautiful and, of course, a great surprise. I like the splash page to close a chapter thing.

OH MY GOD THAT PUPPY IS SO CUTE! And the water effects in the window are great, but I LOVE that puppy! Make my score a solid 10 out of 5!

Ersatz: Not only you, my friend, not only you! ;) And Sophie does look amazing, but that's nature's work, not mine :) Harry: You still made it here pretty fast :) I'm so far behind on SO many comics I should be ashamed for myself. And it looks the way it looks because I was so afraid of leaving the page half-assed ;) So I spent very little doing the actual layout - and a LOT on touching things up :) I had fun with the window pane. Tried out a bunch of effects, only to find the right one by accident. Like: oh hey, this actually looks the way it should! LOL! Tom: Wasn't Ren a ferret? Damn, I'm not sure any more now! I wasn't born in the right country, so I only got to see a handful of Ren & Stimpy cartoons, and I could never tell. Amy: You're not afraid of doing a comic about ants, so You're not afraid of anything ;)
antcomics at 7:49AM, Oct. 29, 2007
Soo cool. Awwwwww. I wasn't a bit afraid to scroll down, honest!
phillip_the_tortoise at 6:40PM, Oct. 28, 2007
u need another one called ren and a cat called stimpy but untill then this cute little one should do!
harryq at 2:13PM, Oct. 28, 2007
Good Lord, I can't be on time for anything anymore! This one got an audible WOW out of me when it loaded, as Fitz raises his own bar once again. Fabulous stuff, top to bottom.
Ersatz at 11:20AM, Oct. 28, 2007
Damn it Fitzy! I didn't see that coming! And that dog looks amazing!
Fitz at 3:52AM, Oct. 28, 2007
Tantz, Dawn and JMT: I didn't think I'd actually make a full page out of it. I thought I'd just draw the dog and that's it. But then I did a tentative whole-page layout, and liked it enough to try and make something of it. The window pane wasn't all that hard to do, actually - though I figured out what to do by accident :) And adding the dog's reflection in the glass wasn't among the original ideas, either. So it's trial and error a lot of times with this comic. D0m: It's Erica's dog and she wanted to have her in the comic. It's simple as that :) Abt: I think I had everybody for a moment there ;) Dog's saliva is, as I heard somewhere, more sterile than humans' ;) Not sure if that's true, but if it's so, that's some food for thought... And I'm not sure if Sophie (yup, that's her actual name) is that affectionate with Erica - but I know my dog is. My take on the superhero genre is going to be a weird one. There's going to be a lot more psychology, which might slow things down a bit, and it's going to be kind of glossy, in a weird way. But of course, there are going to be plenty of homages to the tradition, a lot of good ol' ass-kicking and a heroic superhero ;) ShinGen: You're too kind! I'm just a lesser deity ;) Sidwarrious: Oddly enough, my dog usually turns away from her reflection as if she were afraid. Attacking the mirror would probably be more of a bird thing, I think. Bocaj: Yeah, she doesn't look angry, I know. I saw a real killer chihuahua and it was creepy ;) But I have a little dachshund, myself, and when she's growling, she looks worried rather than angry. And when I give her a scolding look, she'll continue to growl, giving me puppy eyes. Midge: Yup, that's one of Erica's chihuahuas. And Erica's my Muse, not my girl. Waaaay too far away, over in NYC, and wahahaaay out of my league, anyway :) As for the comic, I don't want to reveal too much before I even started working on it - but I will post some art as soon as it's there. All I have for now is a logo and a tagline. Might make a banner out of it, though! Also, check my response to Abt.
TheMidge28 at 12:33PM, Oct. 27, 2007
well done! Sophie is so cute! and yeah nice little trick becasue you totally set us up! Does your girlfriend have a little chihuahua? looking forward to your next update! and the comic idea...as vague as you proposed I would love to hear more about it. Keep us posted!
Bocaj at 11:46AM, Oct. 27, 2007
Only thing wrong with the page: The gggrrrrr.... doesn't seem to match the dog's expression. But I love the dog by itself, very cute.
Sidwarrious at 10:26AM, Oct. 27, 2007
OMG! THE MIRROR PEOPLE ARE ATTACKING! Funny man. Any dog lover has had that problem.
ShinGen at 9:48AM, Oct. 27, 2007

superb job on both the dog and the glass effects.
Abt_Nihil at 7:23AM, Oct. 27, 2007
Such a cute doggie! You had me for a moment there... but dog saliva doesn't seem that pleasant to me. Aaaanyway, awesome coloring, seems like I can reach out and hug Sophie. What a cute name too. I'd love to see your take on superheroes too... I'm curious to see what you came up with. Thanks to Nepath for coming up with Heroes Unite ^^

Cute dog, haha. :-) Could you tell us what the inspiration for this was?
Tantz_Aerine at 5:01AM, Oct. 27, 2007
That is an amazing splash page! That window and the reflection in it absolutely rocks! You did a remarkable job with it. I also really like the dog there. And nice turn of events, too ;)
