In the context of the three panels above, the tattoo's message comes across as haunting and ironic.

Actually, Alex is writing from life for much of this story to bring some individual life into these two characters. Alex put that very tattoo on his own arm right after he lost his best friend in Afghanistan. He said at first that he wasn't there when his friend died but the poignant message on his arm says otherwise, and a glimpse of that story is in Issue #13, in his own words.
