There are several sane ways how to do time travel. First is the one where you can't change the past, everything which you do there already happened. Second is where you have two time dimensions, you travel back in one but the second keeps going forward and keeps causes and effects ordered properly. As we know from Boo/HG, this universe works on the second one, with the usual addition of spawning new versions of timelines. ... most movies get it wrong. Characters fix something and then goes forward in new timeline and their new timeline versions are somehow absent despite not really having reason (and, often, the means) to go fixing timeline ... you are the same person as the one in the new timeline only if you didn't changed anything.

The "Twelve Monkeys" movie had a similar theme, trying to change the past but not being able to do so. Time travel themes can work very well, but it's important to keep the narrative line of cause-and-effect in place, some movies have done a bad job at that and the end up erasing the plot at the end.

Considered this the event that plants the sead in summers mind that she must find a way to undo the past.. and keep past her from betraying her brothers.. consider it a Greek tragedy where lack of info and our efforts to avoid a out come lead to only sadness and death..

The real head kicker is trying to figure out if this is the event that spurs her into time travel to fix everything with Boo/HG or is that time travel the event which triggers this event or is this the that which thats the them to there or... I hate time travel...

Yeah for Summer it just hit home that they won't come home this time.. she can't use magic to get a do over. Her brothers can't get her out of trouble.. this time..
