I'm not too fond of "it was only a dream" plot holes either. I remember a Monty Python sketch where a condemned prisoner was in his cell, then he closed his eyes and the screen blurred and he woke up at a sunshiney picnic and his mother was next to him and he said, "Ah, it was only a dream!" and then his mother said, "No dear, this is the dream, you're back in the cell" and the screen blurred again, and there he was, it was great.
