I admit that I like being at the bottom of the totem pole in a large company, I get to work on the stuff that keeps the company moving and don't have to worry about office politics. Flip This Underworld would be a TV show worth watching at least once. Soon we'll find out whether Lan was clever or made a huge mistake, judging by his track record I'm guessing 50-50 either way.

I'm a computer programmer in a mutual funds company. Any promotion I'd get would put me in a management position where I'm responsible for other people screwing up as well as myself, so I'm hoping to hold my current job title until I retire at 65.

That really depends, being the bottom of the corporate part of the company is fine. But in retail the bottom are pushing carts, cleaning floors, and doing other types of menial labor. These jobs are low wage, high physical strain. I would rather be somewhere in the middle.
