Flights of Fancy Part 11

Air Raid Robertson on Feb. 1, 2011

I took a few days off from doing this comic strip. This is largely because I spent a lot of time on Air Raid Robertson in January. I did about a half dozen pages for this storyline and I also did a couple of pages for the next arc. I guess I just wanted to spend some time drawing some non-Robertson material.

Of course, being mid-story, I couldn't stay away for too long. This page was a tough nut to crack though. It's always a challenge to squeeze in some fisticuffs while I'm also trying to carry some narrative along. There was a lot that I wanted to say on this page, but ultimately I think it all came together in a natural way.

Johnny's comment about the scarves was in my notes almost from the inception of the storyline itself. I also wanted to work in some ninjas. Air Raid Robertson has fought a good number of stock comic book bad guys before. He's faced zombies, vampires, evil wizards, dinosaurs, mad scientists, lizard people, and a kraken. It feels good to cross ninjas off my “to-do” list.
I couldn't help but cite the Law of Inverse Ninjas while I was scripting this scene. For those who don't know, the Law of Inverse Ninjas is a silly decree regarding ficticious ninja fights. As you can guess, it means that the strength and skill of a ninja is directly related to the number of other ninjas in the area. Single ninjas are powerful, but individual members of a ninja swarm are usually defeated quite easily.

The only way to counter the law is to have a indivisualized ninja uniform on.
