man, i'm probbaly already failing at using Italian words correctly… but i refuse to use “dottoressa”. screw this female gendering BS. it's bad enough we have to deal with this shit in German, i would never call a female doctor a “Doktorin” either, it just sounds stupid and insulting. doctors don't have genders, doctors have diplomas.
(English speakers will most likely have no idea what i'm talking about. but if you speak a Latin derived language, you KNOW what i'm talking about. fuck grammatical gendering and everything it stands for. rant over, back to the story.)

Actually "dottoressa" is the more common usage but you can call a female doctor "dottore" in italian, it's not against grammar. With this and other terms (like "professore/professoressa") that come from a present participle term, the "-ssa" is the more common use, but some women prefer to be addressed by the base word (the current premier of Italy asked to be addressed as "il presidente" and not "la presidentessa"). Other women don't care, or in some cases are of the opposite opinion (they think that using the base/male word is like hiding that they are women, and that this is actually more sexist than using the feminine form).

Thanks for the insight! Sound similar how the situation is in German, then. The "-essa" being the equivalent to the German "-in". There are women (like me) here who prefer the neutral/male address as well. I never call myself the feminized version of words either. Like i call myself a Comiczeichner (cartoonist), not a Comcizeichnerin (cartoonistess). Would never even cross my mind to do that. :T
