By Raphael Sanzio
Circa. 1505
High Italian Renaissance
While it may appear a happy scene, Madonna of the Meadow is meant to foreshadow Christ's death. His mother Mary wears a blue and red robe, blue symbolizing the church and red is the blood he will spill for the church. Meanwhile, Mary and St. John watch as Christ holds up his own cross while standing near a batch of poppy flowers.
Poppy flowers representing Jesus's passion, death, and rebirth.
