Realism.
The art of Realism tended to be the opposite of its predecessor, Romanticism. Where Romanticism showed the epic, Realism sot to portray the lives of ordinary people living ordinary lives. The realism movement was a major breakthrough in the arts as there was a belief that only the rich and grand could befell tragedy. Realism painting and writing went to show that even if you were on the bottom of the social ladder, anyone could fall lower.
